Suspension/Spring Setup Suggestions for 130

Cmw1100

In Third Gear
suggestions and advice please…..
130 with the Puma 2.2L - Suspension and springs.
Got a front runner roof rack with a RTT on top.
Got a rear winch fixed up. Also planning to fix up aux sill fuel tank and sill water tank.

Depends what you intend to do with it?

Similar discussion ongoing about rear springs on a 90;

Same comments apply re rating springs to suit the purpose and load you plan to carry.

Ive had the Koni Heavy Track on all four corners for a few years and quite happy with them;

You could upgrade to the Heavy Track Raid if you thought you could justify it, or if planning extensive off-road travels in far-flung exotic locations while carrying heavy loads, then consider fitting twin shock mounts;

Work out your predicted overall weight (and then add a bit!) and then start from there... :D

Dont reinvent the wheel. You are doing work that others have done and for similar purposes.

Have a look at what Sam Watson has done to his and you can send him an email for advice. Hes a friendly and helpful guy and spends a lot of time in the UAE...

For my 110 I went with adjustable rear suspension, fitted the air helper kit which replaces the inner coil spring. I have yet to get some solenoids and guages to make it air up and down from the drivers seat, at present it just has the valve connections for a tyre pump.

Agree with not reinventing the wheel. Keep it simple. Total weight of the vehicle plus weight of permanently mounted accessories plus weight of people plus some for temporary items.

I found this very useful thread

From my own experience of setting up Miffy for all around capability the key is keeping things simple. Others will extol the virtue of adjustable shocks but to me they are just an expensive gimmick. Nothing makes up for the simplicity and robustness of quality bushes, springs and shocks.

The best advice though that I can give you is avoid anything that says HD on the label.

I dont see the point of adjustable shocks either outside of motor sport.
They make almost zero difference if your springs are either too hard or soft, and are you really going to clamber underneath to adjust damper rates if you carry a load?
Thank you so much. Sent him a message on instagram and also via his site blog.
Let us know if he replies and what his advice is..?

Precisely... I did once fit the adjustable Koni Heave tracks thinking hey wouldn't it be cool/useful to be able to adjust for weight and trailers. Complete ball ache as you had to pop one end off the mounts to change the adjustment. Then there are the ones with the exposed plastic dials on them :rofl: Those would last 3 minutes in my life. The electronic on the fly adjustable ones look good though but the cost is YIKES.... as are the remote res shocks. Great I am sure but YIKES.

Unnecessary things to go wrong. There are many necessary things that can still go wrong :rofl:
Agreed. Why ask for extra trouble?
Next month going to venture out into the vast Saudi Arabia for a week. Will see how it goes with the stock setup, and slowly upgrade things.

Havent heard anything from him yet. And also don't think he's based here in UAE anymore.

He was in Egypt, but moved his base of operations to the UAE as things were becoming more difficult in Egypt (I think to do with travel restrictions).
I know he is currently staying in the UK (Yorkshire I believe) for family reasons, but he is planing overseas trips for this year and a move back to the UAE when he can.

Egypt - lord have mercy. Can imagine how difficult things can be there. Anyways, looking forward to his reply. I even joined Facebook :) so I can message him messenger

Hes quite active on FB so you have a better chance I think.
He posts pics of his desert travels very regularly which make me want to get out there...
I'm hoping to do Western Sahara / Northern Mauritania (Chinguetti / Richat Structure etc) in the Autumn...

Hey. I've a 130 with similar loading to you. I run Camel Trophy spec coil-within-coil rear springs and twin pairs of remote reservoir Fox shocks. I also left the antiroll bar hooked up. Hope that helps.

I had Scotland - Morocco planned last year in October. (thru Belgium, France, Andorra, Spain) but had to cancel two weeks before the trip. Few friends who I brought in to attend had a great time.
Maybe this October I might plan to do the same. and upon return spend some in Portugal and the Pyrenees
