1971 Range rover

Grumbleweed

Trekker
I am re-commissioning an early range rover.
the old girl will run and starts well but never really runs great.
I have noticed that whilst the airbox is off, and the end of the carbs are accessible, the right hand one takes in lots of air and will stall if i cover the intake, whilst the left hand one seems to consume much less air and will not stall when covered. Any suggestions?

Other than that, it seems to run very rich and smokes a bit- not blue which is a good sign!

Sounds like a bad carb or manifold seal - the gaskets ahve probably had it or the mating faces may have warped.

Good luck on the project - a '71 RR is a deserving cause.

Some progress.
i wound in the two obvious screws on the carbs and then out an equal amount. Has anyone got a good guide for setting mixture?

i ran it up the road and - lots more power and goes like stink, but at a certain revs, it backfires a bit- not hugely and out of the exhaust and not the carbs.
plugs perhaps?
i'm sorry to be such a donut but i am used to webers and have never had any experience of SU's!
i have another set of carbs which i may try as i have no idea of the condition of the jets on these ones!

well, i have given myself a crash course in SU carbs- i took one apart to see how it works, and now i have managed to balance them both really nicely and it now sits at idle really well and has lots of power.
Going to give it a treat of some new plugs and some paint on the doors to make it one colour!
I also gave it a bit of a polish to see what the main paintwork is like- quite impressed really!

look at the new bits of chassis that the previous owner made!

My alternator also seems to have come back into life. I charged up the battery and that seems to have helped it along.

Next on the list is to buy a headlining and door cards from nationwide trim and fit that.
Now that she drives ok, i will take her up to my mates garage and MOT it beginning of next month.
Apart from the YVB cars, what is the oldest Rangie on the road- does anyone know?

Some progress over this weekend-
I ran the old girl up the road after fiding that the dizzy was loose, i tightened it to an approximate setting (have no timing light as yet) and it ran smoothly.
On full welly, after a few yards, it seemed like it had fuel starvation so i ended up taking the carbs apart- lots of crud in them and really gummed up! One jet was really blocked too.
After running up the road again, it was better but still hesitating so back to the thinktank.
I ended up taking the fuel pump apart to check the filter which turned out to be almost fossilised with crap!

has anyone else found this with old fuel pumps? I havent replaced the filter as it already has an inline filter. May replace the pump as i'm not convinced that it's putting a consistent pressure through.

This week, i am going to try and give it a good run to get the crap out of the exhaust.

One question for you all, On major wellying, it is putting out some blue smoke- could overfilling the dashpots and therefore the oil seeping through the carb piston do this- it has 15w50 in them. it is not a great deal of smoke and only does it when accellarating. There is nothing on idle at all.
might just need a good hard run.

a probable breakthrough- i left it running this morning and after about 10 mins, it cut out. I couldn't hear the fuel pump either- i gave it a wallop and off it went again!
New one on order!!
