2.5nad head gasket

brewster

First Gear
Not so sure I want the answer to this...but hey ho!

Just spent the last day and a half changing the head gasket on my Landie. Turned it over for the first time, it took some effort, but I was expecting that, given that there might still be oil in the boar. However when I took it out for a little drive I couldn't see for plumes of blue smoke and lost all power.

Any ideas?

Why did you have to do the Gasket? Water loss or something else?

Blue is oil, obviously, Were the bores scored at all? If the engine overheated, the pistons can pick up and the rings get aluminium over them, They jam into the grooves and you would have trouble starting, then burn oil very badly.

I did a VW Caddy engine a few weeks ago, it had got hot, looked reasonably good, but all 4 pistons had been damaged and stuck rings. ( Just sold it on E bay.:) )

It's remarkably easy to put the head gasket on the wrong way round on this engine, which produces clouds of blue smoke.
Not that I ever did this you understand - not even twice!:(
