2000 TD4 wont start.

Accelerating Away
Had to call the AA man out to recover my wifes TD4 coz it wouldnt start! The AA squirted "easy start" into the air intake hose and it started! He advised that the tank pump had packed up and I needed to take it to a garage. This I did, and when we turned the engine off , at the garage, it started immediatly! since then its started 6 times OK over a period of 2hrs. One thing I have noticed is the under bonnet pump runs briefly when the ignition is 1st turned on. I cant remember hearing it run when the FL failed to start. Also, I dont know how he knew that the tank (scavenge) pump was faulty, coz he didnt examine or test it at all....

The garage reported that until the FL fails to start, they woulnt be able to diagnose the fault. Code reader reported no fault either. Fair enough...

Any ideas please??

Could be one of the pumps going down intermitantly or giving low pressure. Could also be the injectors on their way out. They are the most likely causes as it runs with some assistance to get it started at first. Dificult to tell unless you get it faulting again.

Yes, it 'should' bring a fault code up with that. It wouldnt start at all if the cam sensor died.

Yes, but I've read already of intermittent problems with the cam sensor, no start, leave it cool down a while and ok again ? But then again if this could be the problem it "would/should" generate a fault report, so technically it is ruled out. Sorry for the interruption and good luck.

We had to have a new cam sensor fitted. No engine light, didn't check for any fault codes. Symptoms were as Will described. Engine would start fine from cold and also start okay if it was stopped and restarted within a short time. If it was left longer, say 45-hour, the engine would turn over but not fire. Leave it to stand longer and it fired up okay. Both the RAC man and the garage I took it to thought it was the fuel pump in the tank. I spent an afternoon on the Internet and found the cam sensor problem described and passed it onto the mechanic. He was dubious and still wanted to rip the fuel system apart but after I insisted, he checked with a mate at the LR dealer and fitted a new cam sensor (£60)and not had a problem since. I'm grateful for the people who posted the problem and solution after they had spent a lot of money finding it.

Re: 2000 TD4 wont start. Update

LR started fine this mornng!!.. Drove 50 miles with several (5) stop/starts inc a variety of 'cooling off' periods. Pump (under bonnet) ran up every time the ignition key was turned. Engine fired on the button!! so much for the AA mans "pump in the tank has packed up" comment.... Watch this space............ Ta for the feedback..........

Mate the cam sensor doesn't always illuminate the fault light, and that is with all cars, believe me i know I am a mechanic at Renault. Though unlikely check the heater plugs as well, if you have white smoke coming out of your exhaust when starting up then you could have a couple of heater plugs busted. Place a wire on the + battery pole and scratch the other end on the end of the heater if theres a spark then they should be ok. Also clean the front part of the cam sensor with a contact spray.
What else does your TD4 do when it won't start, what are its symptoms.

I presume that the engine turned over on the starter, so did you notice if the engine turned any slower than usual, if so then maybe the engine or battery earth may be faulty, particularly as it started after being moved to the garage. It could be that a layer of ice or frost was interfering with the metal to metal contact. If it happens again try putting a jump lead from the negative battery terminal direct to the engine to test the earth, if it turns over faster then the earth is your problem Sometimes in the sort of cold weather we have had today it can find a loose or faulty earth wanting.

Thanks Costas... I really believe the/or one of the pumps stopped working. I couldnt hear the pumps prime the system when turning on the ignition key. Now the pump(s) runs every time and car starts ok! Until it fails again I cant proceed any further.. I'll bear in mind your advise re cam sensor.. ED

Thanks ED. The day it happened it was very mild dry sunny day... The car had been driven and the engine was still luke warm. The starter spun over very fast. Thanks again...ED
