200TDi Rocker Gear Removal

LeeBee

Accelerating Away
Can anyone please tell me if removing the rocker gear on my 200TDi will upset the head gasket (i.e do the studs that hold it down go through the head and into the block like on my Mini)

I have an annoying(!!) tapping sound that appears to be coming from the back of the engine, 2 people said it sounds like the tappets so I was going to inspect the rocker pads, shaft push rods etc

The clearances appear to be spot on, if I dont find anything obvious can I put the rear rockers at the front of the engine (I know the inlet and exhaust rockers will be different) to see if it makes a difference before spending more money

Anything else I should look out for?

You should be able to remove the rocker shaft [and rockers] without worrying about the Head gasket. The bolts go into tapped holes in the Head.

PS if you want some good s.h rockers, or even a complete shaft let me know, I just happen to have one kickin' about the garage.

Thanks for the info!, off to do a bit of investigation now so will let you know!

Well everything looks fine, number 2 pushrod a little scored on the ball end but nothing major

Problem is I slackened all the adjusters off (as per Haynes) so now have no idea what valve was open closed etc

Is there an easy way to solve this or have I let myself in for yet more stress!?

Use the "Rule of 9" and a piece of chalk.

Turn the engine until a valve is fully down, ( say number 1) 1 from 9 is 8. Set number 8, then chalk it. Turn engine until next valve is fully down, take that from 9, set the relevent number and chalk it.

You will do all the settings in 2 engine rotations.

On an inline 6 cylinder, use the "Rule of 13"

Chris

So do I just nip up all the rockers against the valves then turn the engine until a valve starts to open?

I wish I hadn't undone everything now, if I had just undone the shaft and removed it I would be able to drive the damn thing tonight as I would just have tightened it back up where it was and set the clearances again, as a result I now have 8 fully closed valves and 8 loose rockers!:(

Have you slackened them all right off?

Just screw them in until they just touch the valves, then start the setting. As you start turning the engine, some will become very slack, just take a bit of the gap up, if you see any that are wide. They each go down in turn, so keep an eye on when the rocker stops and starts to come back up, then set the 9 minus ( whichever number is down).

Nice one Chris, this is a result from that problem with the tapping noise we were discussing a few weeks ago, had a couple of car mates listen and they all independently agreed it sounded like noisey tappets at the back of the engine so I stripped it down and found nothing wrong...

Just realised where you are and if I am correct the next time I pop up to Blackpool I can jump on a tram and come and buy you a beer!

If the noise is low down, try holding the lift pump primer lever up, does the noise stop?

Yep, I live near the end of the Tram route. We have a spare room in case anyone wants to stop over.

Chris

Not sure on the lift pump, the noise is only noticable at highish revs, the lift pump handle is sort of up at the moment but I will check it out tomorrow

My other half has relatives in Blackpool so I find myself up there from time to time, and as well as my Landys and (real) Mini I also own 2 of Blackpools finest, well what was before that russian boy screwed it all up!

We have a TVR in the back unit, gathering dust. Bloke tried to Trade it in for another car, but the Salesmen were suspicious and called the Police. Not sure if it's stolen, finance or what, but it's been there for a few months.

Chris

If you feather the throttle does it alter the sound? It could be a little end.

Chris

It's weird it only seems to become apparent when the engine is at certain revs, it does do it when stationary but you would have to put your foot down half way to the floor, thing is this has only just started since I had the cambelt done, it also feels a bit flat, certainly not as perky as it used to be (I have also fitted a new Ashcroft box and input gear but I don't think it is this)

Got it running again (thanks Chris) made sure the rockers were spot on (used my DTI)
Tapping still there:( , all I found was the valve caps that sit between the valve stem and rocker pad seemed to float about a little bit from side to side but they were all the same

It might be timing (I didn't do the belt) or it might just be the fact that I am tuned into the noise!

Only other thing I can think of is the exhauster pump on the side of the block, for the brake servo vacuum.

I haven't done much on 200s recently, we only sell 300s and TD5s now, the 300 is a bit different IIRC,but some of the Lads have stripped them down and can tell you what to look for.
