200tdi white engine smoke...looks expensive

Spanish Bob

Accelerating Away
:eek:

White smoke pouring out of oil filler cap and out of the dipstick hole when you remove dipstick. Engine sounds OK, its running a little faster than before. Also more smoke out the exhaust as well (also white).

Previously the engine was great, no smoke other than on Start up and pulled hard. Ive taken it to my local landie independent and Ill give him a call tomorrow. Its got 140k kms on the clock oil changes every 5k kms.

How much pain am I looking at?:sobbing:

Worrying about your ITV? We've just cleaned the shelves of the local shops to buy additives, there isn't a problem with the engine that I know of, just a bit of smoke out of the exhaust that doesn't seem to comply.:(

I paid 150€ to get it retuned, additive (x2 bottles) in the tank, plus a couple of other minor snags, and it went through the next time. As I say, no major engine problems and the mechanic sd it was good as gold. No white smoke though, only black. :rolleyes: Adrian

There's something either on here about the colour of the smoke and the problem but I can never remember them. You may want to search -somewhere.

Black=Fuel
White=Vapour
Blue=Oil

White, or rather steam when the engine is up to operating temperature is a sign of a head gasket failure or similar fault. Check the condition of the coolant fluid for oil contamination and the engine oil for milky-colouring for contamination from the coolant.

White smoke is water..
Blue smoke is oil.........
Black smoke is overfueling.
Ah But !!! :eek: unburnt fuel can come out as white/grey :eek:

Looks like a head gasket to me. 140,000 kms what's that in miles ??? 90,000 ish. Well 200Tdi's are renowned for a head gasket going at that mileage.
Get the head checked for both level and a pressure test when it's taken off.

Not quite,Black is too much fuel or not enough air,white is often partially burnt fuel as result of hosing injectors or incorrect timing.

One thing is the colour another thing is the amount. Im talking lots of smoke.

I thought of the head gasket, but would smoke be coming out of the dipstick hole if it was the head gasket?

Deffo not the ITV that worries me - its a wrecked engine thats my concern, .....although a V8....:rolleyes:

Yep the mechanic was doing a compression test today - hopefully more tomorrow!

If coolant is entering the oil mixture, then the coolant could be evaporating from the high temperatures that the oil has when the engine is up to operating temp. This means the gas has to exit some way, and these ways are either the dipstick or filler.

That's my view on it. Whether I'm entirely correct I'm not sure. Am I right lads?

Thanks for the opinions! Its going to have the compression test done this morning some time and then I guess we will see. I hope its not too expensive or th money I had put aside for a snorkel that works and intercooler and som cosmetics wont get me very far!:(

apparently it isnt th head gasket and there cooling system is not affected. None of the odd turbo problems either. So Im told its likely to be piston rings although there might be some other damage. Its going to be stripped down but I´ll get an estimate this pm.

bollox.

Yea its almost definatley rings if smoke is come out your filler and dipstick, I had the same symptoms along with bellowing smoke, I had new rings, fitted problem solved.

Ok can I ask what you did that made it start smoking? Had you been out off roading or did it just suddenly start without warning or something else?

However a friend of mine had this and it was the head gasket that had failed proper style...

I do off road it, nothing like winching out of mud holes etc, but it get used as it should. Recently I have done very little due to travel and Me and mrs SB separating. TBH it just came on suddenly one day it didnt and the next day it did. Left it parked up over christmas and yesterday drove Ivor the engine to the workshop.

Ok I am asking on behalf of my hubby who is a retired mechanic....... he says the white smoke that came out of the exhaust....... did it burn your eyes or smell and taste really sweet or neither of these things? And do you have anti freeze in your system?

didnt burn eyes or smell especially, You´ll find this hard to believe but I didnt taste it!;)

No anti freeze in system.

thanks!

Hehe, cant say I blame you. Funny fella is my hubby :D Anyway his opinion is still water rather than rings, he reckons if it was rings the smoke would be more grey/blue. Has the motor been using any water or has it gone a funny colour that you have noticed?

nope until now the motor has never used water and uses very very little oil. Oil is oil coloured and then goes dark as it should, never had the cuppucino oil that I have had in motorbikes when theyve gone for a swim.:rolleyes:

The mechanic also checked the cooling system and water levels pressure all tickedyboo (?).

thanks again!
