3.9 V8 potential purchase-advice?

callisr

Trekker
After being discoless for 2 years (:( ), I think it is nigh time I got another ( )!
I am off to look at a '97 'R' reg 3.9 (gas converted) V8 auto disco in the next few days and could do with some pointers with regard to what to look out for.
I am familiar with the chassis and body side of things but have very little experience of V8's or LPG or automatics. It has 114k on the clock. Is there anything specific I should look out for or any tell tale signs of impending doom?

sliped linners are known to happen to these engines more likely the 4.0 ... but look out for Presure in the coolant system, when you first look at the car Make sure the engine is completely cold and undo the coolant system if it hissis its HG or worse ...

the LPG set up, it is best to look for a LPGA certificate, not esental but desirable

Multi point run better are more efecant and less power loss

Tank, these have a retest date, cant remember of the top of my head just make sure its not an old tank that has been reused 4 Whole tanks are considerd to be better than one

how big is the tank? remeber they dont actualy acept the full L of the total tanks i have 2 40L tanks that can I can fit about 61L before the vavles start rataling

is this ok i am sure there is more but i have to run away to a meeting now

Aidan

Thanks Aidan!
The LPG system has a certificate although I am not sure how long ago the conversion was done. It is the multi point sequential system.
It has 4 tanks with an approximate capacity of 120L. Two of the tanks are under the sills and hidden by side steps. The other two are in the space that would have housed the fuel tank. A new fuel tank (of about 6 gallon capacity I believe) has been fitted inside the rear quarter panel and is refilled using the original filler on the side. I have the impression that it wasn't a cheap installation!
Looking forward to seeing it tommorrow (despite the weather)! If it's a crock of sh1te I will walk away as there are plenty to go look at.

I would look for a red one with side steps, heated front screen, twin sun roofs, Cruise and air con..When you do the deal insist he does the paint blemishes, re gases the air-con, fills it full of fuel and gives you a set of mats. Get a friend to lie down on a filthy mat, in the snow!! to check the sills....Finally make sure you get nearly a grand more for your PX than you expected....Jammy bar steward:D

I just hope people don't say "Oh look! His and His disco's...One is callisr and the other is Mungo...Didnt know Mungo was gay":D
THIS IS MINE!!...I was first!:D
Good luck with it matey.

Dunno what you are on about Mick:rolleyes:

Thanks for your 'help' today! It provided Sarah with almost endless entertainment-especially as she watched you try to get up off your grubby bit of carpet!

Pic on the left is now Mine, the one on the left is Micks! As he said before, 'His and his'!!:D

That grubby bit of carpet, as you call it, has caused a lot of problems in the mungo household tonight:( ...Its still in your car AND the lovely Louise has noticed it missing out of the hall:o

As the power steering fluid is also red we can overlook the leak for associate life members;)

Sure thing Mungo, Do you take credit cards? :D

I like to see the leak as a way of leaving my mark in lots of different places, similar to a dog and lamp posts.

Whereever she burbles, she leaves her mark...mostly on the tarmac or lots of colourful shades on wet grass:)

Not personally...I think there are special slots for that. Ask Callisr, he has slots to take most things that come his way.
