69 series IIa rear end differential

Shifting Up
Does anyone know the best way to remove the rear differential from the axle while it is on the vehicle? I have a 1969 series IIa and when I turn the driveline on the rear differential, there is movement on the rear axles/wheels (any ideas?). I thought I would take out the 12 nuts that are holding the differential off but it seems to be being held by something. It came out about 1/4 inch and then is stuck. Anything else I should do while it is out?

Thanks,
Dan

Sounds like this is the rear axle. Go to the wheel and undo the six bolts holding the drive flange onto the hub, pry it and attached axle out of the diff. Go to the other side and do the same.

Reading your original post, it sounds like you missed a word; "not"?

If you turn the drive shaft and there is NOT movement at the wheels, it is probably because you have a broken drive axle, usually the short side and usually at the diff end. Common problem after 20,000 miles of hard driving.
