air suspension td5

neil handley

In Third Gear
hi ,i´ve got a problem with the air suspension on my 2000 td5,the near side rear sometimes deflates while parked, it can go days with no problem,is there a valve or something sticking, any ideas?

what are your thoughts on doing a coil spring conversion!:)

There will be a leek in the Air bag at the back it usually goes on a crease and sometimes it wornt leek some times it will, one way to cheque for sure is to put it at of road higt and spray dulute washing up liquid on it sometimes you can see bubbles ... the part is a doodle to fit but buy new clips as well as sometimes they break when you take them of

other things it can be, less likley but known are

The Valaves in the distrobution block can fail
the pipes can rust though - specal order part and quite expensive

Get it fixed soon or you will burn out the compressor (under pasennger footwell) and this is expsnsive

In my opinion I would retain the current system and not do the coil conversion, but that dessison all depends on what you are using the disco for

I had the same on mine. Got replacement air spring from Paddocks £79+VAT and the clips from Main dealer ( £1 for 2). Easy job for DIY mechanic!!

We have the same problem ,near side sometimes goes down and then recovers . Car is now in The Alps with both sides flat ! Any suggestions welcome .

Got the same problem last year. Thought also that is was something else than a leak in the balloon. But at the end of the day all problems were gone by replacing the balloon.
Indeed, very easy job to do yourselve.

the fault with the air bags can be intermetant as they usualy go on a crease

But it could also be the vales ... if both sides always go at the same time

Not a good idea to run like this for a long time otherwise the compressor goes and thats expensive (easy to swap out though i am told)

My 1999 td5's rear passenger side suspension deflates fully every night for last 4 or so weeks, local dealership said it was a 'leak in the air suspension compressor' causing it, but did not explain why it only effects the rear left side. I've asked them to another look before I agree to them replacing the compressor as I was sure it would be one of the air springs that was leaking. I'll let you know what the resolution ends up being.

Billy I would check it by jacking the body up and rubbing some washing up liquid on the airbag ,it should only take you ten minutes and you will know for sure ,compressor is £165 compared to an airbag £80

Wher have you seen compressors that cheap? Mine cost almost £300 inc:eek:

hi thanks for your repies,i´ve ordered 2 from paddocks.
what is the procedure for fitting them, they are suppose to be easy,
i live in the mountians in spain and there isn´t too many reliable mechanics,so i´ll do them myself, many thanks again

There's a couple of compressors on eBay for £220.
I did get the air spring checked out by my local independent and they could not find any noticeable air spring leaks and recommended I take it to the local Dealership. LR ran diags and checked over and seemed adamant it was the compressor 'leaking'. I'm taking the car back to them tomorrow (i've got the TC/ABS/HD amber lights on my dashboard - again) and I've asked them to check it again and give me an accurate quote for repair. I'll then decide what to do (get them to do it or buy off ebay and get local independant to fit).
It's a late 1999 TD5 with 90K on the clock and as soon as it hit the 7 year old mark seemed to amass a lot of problems (drive's really great though):
* TC/ABS/HD amber lights on my dashboard - These stayed on - LR 'fixed' a few weeks back, but they're intermittently coming back on.
* A veritable fresh water spring coming from the roof lining after each downpour. I've sealed the sunroofs (both) with black sealant, but it's worse than ever now. So, I'm looking to seal the alpines, guttering, top windscreen seal. Or by the wife a hat.
* Driver side front and middle doors not opening with remote CL. Need to open with a key.
* The air suspension problem.

Wife want to get a Landcruiser. : - (

jack up the body untill the wheel is of the ground ,take off wheel ,clean top of turret and remove the 2 clips (they will probably break )
unscrew the pipe connection on top of air bag slowly to allow it to depressurise (putting a small hole in the airbag speeds this up)
when the pressure is off turn the airbag bottom 90 degrees and it lifts out
reassemble is a reverse then start it up to inflate it
remember to get the new clips with the air bag ,good luck :)

hi again,
i´ ve fitted the air bags, problem solved, thanks again for all your help.

Can the air springs be fitted by using the original bottle jack that comes with discovery or will i need trolley jack and axle stands???

Just dont want to start work and find out i wish i took it to a garage, whom has quoted £60 to fit em, which i thinks a rip off.
