Alternator Diode dead - what to do

Mr Kay

In Fourth Gear
My 88 has the Lucas 16ACR alternator, one of the diodes of which gave up the other day resulting in a frantic drive home wondering how long the bettery was going to keep supplying the ignition and headlights (it was at night, naturally - to add extra flavour we were on our own in the middle of the woods on our local byway :rolleyes:).

I've stripped the alternator out and a single diode in the rectifier pack has stopped doing the traditional diode thing.

I have many options, in ascending order of cost:
I'm aware that having driven a distance with a knackered diode won't have done the rest of the alternator any good. How long will the windings last? Is it worth buying a new one for £25? Are the ones p*dd*cks supply any good? Should I use this as an ideal opportunity to upgrade it? By my calculations, four spotlights, headlights, radio etc will draw 30 odd amps, quite near the max of 34A of the 16ACR. If I buy the new one from p*dd*cks, delivery will be negligable as I've been meaning to buy a hi-lift there anyway.

Does this make sense?
What would you do?
:confused::confused::confused:

Thanks in advance :)

Cheers guys, you've just cost me £45 :Cross:

;)

Thanks for the replies, I know it's the sensible option but I'm a skinflint at heart :(
