Am I being unreasonable??

I noticed some time ago that there appears to be an increasing number of posters who ask a question and then vanish, never to be heard of nor contribute to the forum ever again.

Ironically, they usually get the response that is required to resolve their initial enquiry.

I have to admit that I do find this sort of scenario somewhat annoying. First time poster, question ( usualy in depth ), and goodbye!!!!
Kind of doesn't comply with my thinking regarding the whole ethos and intent of the forum.

Am I being unreasonable here??????? Surely this forum is worthy of more?????

I suppose some are still of the oppinion that the internet is a faceless database. There often tends to be a disassociation from the reality that a real live person is actually tapping on the keyboard somewhere prior to the words being posted in answer to a question.
We are all automated & programmed to some extent & some don't feel a need to recipricate or indeed know that it is desired by others.

Just because they do not post, does not mean they do not still visit the forum, or even contribute.

Not everyone are comfortable with taking part in discussions, for what ever reason.

;mmmm there are often a lot of people shown as logged in and yet not a whisper on the shoutbox all evening. But lots of regulars only do actual threads which is fine. And some never go to certain sections.
I guess I would possibly do the same on another forum if I was desparate for info on er, say sewing. It might not be intentional, just after the crisis they go back to their regular haunts. There are also so many Landy forums I think I may have looked at some, felt the urge to contribute a bit of my particular wisdom, then forgotten they existed.
There is one forum I did a few posts on last year but felt there was so much gratuitous obscenity from a couple of kids that the moderators were happy with I just felt it wasn't the place for me.
The only time I do object to it is when someone registers with my name and then does the moonlight flit like you say, leaving me having to remember another loggin.

It does seem a little off, but as long as they're polite, I don't mind too much. I just hate the ones that burst in with a blunt question, no brief "hello" or whatever, and expect everyone to leap at the solution to their problem. It doesn't annoy me as much as those who don't bother to write their posts legibly, though. Some members have extreme difficulty in writing their posts, but still go to the effort. Those that ignore spelling and grammar out of laziness really get on my nerves.

No I don't think you are.

I too on another forum gave up answereing the one poster. I would point them to the archives but then gut bullied for doing that  I don't visit that place now to post :D

I have great difficulty writing posts.
English was not my best subject at school. In fact I was in the bottom three of my class at English.

When I first came here looking for info (that must have been at least 7yrs ago ) I used the search button...seemed common sense to me that the info I was looking for may well have been answered before. Once I found what I was after I lurked a bit and realised that this seemed like a friendly place to be, so joined in more :)

Of course I do understand that the full answer to ones questions are not always in the archive.....and common sense these days is often a rarity

Depends on the post I guess. I have seen posts that are the 1st post - I need to know this, this and that. We give answers to the best of our knowledge and no thank you, or reply - this too annoys me. Then there are polite posts, where some asks a senible question, and once responsed too - thanks those who responsed - this doesn't annoy me.

I think forums are interesting, take me for an example. I'm a member of this forum and also one on Skodas. Now on the Skoda forum, I've posted about 10-15 times over the last couple of years. I own a Skoda, I use the forum to search for problems my car has etc, and to ask for help. I try to say thanks if given help. Now on this forum, I don't own a Land Rover, but have 600+ posts - why is it because

- share a interest in Land Rover's - Skoda is just a car?
- jokes are funnier
- i work for Land Rover, and what you say/think about the products I help to make gives me an insight into the customers mind

Can you get bits cheap...OR....Do you want a tester who could give honest and unbiased feedback for any trick bits ....
Failing that can you get any stuff knocked off:D

I'm told I can buy parts from Land Rover Dealers at a discount. I can also buy Land Rovers, Volvo's, Jaguars and Ford with a discount - all new - discount depends on vehicle. I know that we do use people for evaluations, but I don't know how you get on that list - you prob have to have brought a new Range Rover every year for the last ten years or something like that.

Scuze me sir! What's a "shoutbox"? You make it sound like something I'm supposed to know about and use.

Been here for some time and only ever go to certain forums. I don't have any interest in most of them, however I have to point out that this must be the best forum site on the Web because the "Series" forum is the one at the top of the list. Well done crew!

Interesting... I too did the same thing. I had 2 Skoda's. One developed a strange problem the dealer could not find. That forurm, I guess it's the same one, told me the answer in 5 minutes.

...but like you say, I've not been back becuae the general chat wasn't that good. Plus I wasn't bothered whether I could fit 22's with a 2 GigaWatt amp!

The way I see it, if a person joins to get an answer to a particular problem, all well and good. Especially if its one of those in depth rare weird things that make a body scratch their head.

The advantage is of course that the resultant answers are there for all to see, so even if the original poster doesn't come back and join in, that thread is there to help others.

I do try to be polite myself, and say thankyou for help in a query. It's only fair.

It costs nothing to say thank you to people who have potentially saved you a lot of time, effort and money. I know many good folk on here have helped me and i thank them all...

you see...costs nothing.
