Accelerating Away
With more and more derfenders being nicked these days, i was just wondering what you guys do to protect your trucks from being stolen.

One of mine is a fuel cutoff. about 45quid from Durite. The relay is wired so it drops the power when you turn the engine off. and will only come back on once a momentary button is pressed.

a clutch claw ,cobra imobiliser and then the works van parked across the end of the driveway blocking the landrovers exit . ive also caged the two smailler windows in the rear and added a padlock to the rear door.

Best two things anyone can do. :)
Pushing in a small back window to unlock the rear door is the fastest and easiest way into any defender ! Takes a matter of seconds

The first security measure I take is to not publicise on the internet what I have done to secure my vehicle...

But most thieves aren't that thick... and know most of the tricks anyway!!!
In all honesty most LR's are stolen by semi professional gangs.

In line switches to the fuel stop solenoid or starter solenoid are completely pointless....

Any pre Td5 Diesel can be started under the bonnet with two lengths of wire (one length if you bump/push start it)... regardless of any immobiliser!! - Is the same with the standard LR set up as I showed someone on this forum!!!

It isn't hard to stop a standard LR alarm going off either!!!

Td5's (Defender) aren't impossible either... last time I did one, took me about 5 mins to have a Td5 running without keys or the alarm fobs!! - this was for a vehicle breakers... I haven't got a sideline business!!!

Either go for mechanical protection - something like a disklock, or a full metal jacket (over the pedals) or a big dog ;)

One good method is an isolator switch on the main battery feed... and then bolt the seat box cover down!!!
This will take away 'any' 12v feeds to under the bonnet.... which will delay most thieves!!!
Without meaning to be a self plug, I can supply a suitable isolator and wiring so simply a bolt together job!! - and we are not talking cheap plastic jobbies with keys that are available any where.

If the isolator switch is semi hidden then at least it will slow people down.

I could bypass the fuel solenoid and starter system, including immobiliser, on any Tdi or earlier diesel LR vehicle and any petrol Defender/Series. We all know how to gain entry, and most observers ignore alarms, which could be silenced quickly. Mechanical control interference is the way to go - Clutch Claw, Full Metal Jacket, Disklock...

So basically what I've just said above then....

A clutch claw wouldn't stop the determined theif though... all you have to do is drive clutchless, and use the handbrake to slow you down.

While fiddling with the wiring for my alternator recently i worked out just how simple it was to start!

Slightly shocked... I use mechanical protection and usually remove a few simple parts if parked up for a while! As Porny said, more to slow them down than stop them!

Often fancied one of those removable steering wheels?

no doubt if they want it they will take it ... carjack you at the lights , break into your house take your keys then your car or even a flatbed truck and carry it away. :(

We've got one of those mech locks, which when the clutch is pressed, it stays engaged, hence out of gear. We worked out that if you knew exactly what you were doing, you could start in gear, get up to speed and drive without the clutch. However, you can park with the clutch down anyway, negating this problem.

We also worked out that if you get carjacked, the passenger has to remove the keys, and the driver leaves the car running out of gear. Everyone gets out and runs (to the police or to get that big bit of pipe lying on the side of the road), provided they don't tow it or carry it away, then it will still be there.

We also have coachbolts on the doors. like the ones used on vans. Should stop the stupid theif.

A "Turbo" sticker on the back, if they know anything about Land Rovers they wont touch it.:D
Seriously though, the bypass to the injector pump solenoid is what I would fit.

seen as mine no longer has wash/wipe i rigged the lpg/petrol control unit through the rear wiper switch. with no power to the changeover switch both fuels are cut off, although it will start on the fuel in the carbs being a v8 they wont get far ;) and seen as its the lpg system i thought this might be more foreign to most theives than the normal ignition system. and who would think to try the rear wiper switch??? (well, everyone now ive mentioned it!)

I've just purchased a 'Clutch Claw' from Screwfix and whilst it may slightly put off a opportunist, as somebody has already pointed out, you can drive clutchless on the handbrake!
I'll certainly be fitting some rear window guards next, anybody recommend any?
I'm more interested in 'Nick Boys' Meck lock though, anybody else any thoughts on these? Obviously the gang with the lowloader, grabber or the keys will still take it away, but you do what you can.....
