Any disadvantages to a 1.2 Transfer box kit?

Jumpjim

Accelerating Away
Ashcroft transmissions have just quoted me £225 for a 1.2 transfer box ratio kit to fit to my TD5.

I understand that this changes the top ratios but leaves the bottom end unchanged (They confirmed this).

Is there any potential pitfalls or downsides to this that I haven't come across yet? I was also looking at buying the Autologic remap which gives about 185bhp to balance everything back up again.

So for approx. £600 you are effectively doing what the GKN overdrive would do but with a lot less to go wrong, and cheaper.

Is this a naive, oversimplistic view? I'm sure you lot will put me straight...:D

Not quite - it changes all of the high ratios - but leaves the low range gears unaffected.

Perhaps you could do a search on this site for similar topics and people who have had the modification?

A TD5 should be fine with the 1:2 ratio.. my 110 CSW has the 1:2 ratio and i've never had any probs. You loose some speed on steep hills so you end up having to change down but then mine has a 200tdi engine and it's a 93...
Id say do it ;)

If you raise the high-range gearing with the 1.2:1 Disco gears you'll raise all of the high-range gears by 15% or so, including 1st gear. The latter point is especially important if you tow anything.

So a remap helps sorts that out and also gives the TD5 the guts to pull the higher gear effectively.

I was told (Porny?) that this is where a proper remap works better than the add-on boxes in that they work across the rev range, not just the upper end.

I'm very pleased with the JE Engineering remap and 1.2:1 gearing - makes the 110 much more pleasurable to drive.

Sounds ideal for what I want.

Next question: How difficult is it to install the new transfer box gearing? I'm certainly no mechanic but fairly sensible and methodical given a set of instructions from somewhere.

Is there a set of instructions available or am I better off paying my friendly mechanic Bob to do it for me?

jumpjim - as you seem to be in my neck of the woods and want to drive my similar conversion feel free - pm me

I thought you were going to offer to do it for him then! In which case you could've done mine too!

I'm quite interested in this also, and from the sounds of it about the same skill as jumpjim... I did an engine change with the help of a mechanically minded person... So I'd be quite interested to see how difficult this would be to fit to my 200TDi 90.

James,

I'd love to come round and let you show off your new toy:D Give me a buzz at some point.

I live in Nutley, south of Forest Row/East Grinstead on the A22. Probably best known for the Ganges Indian restaurant.

I'd delete that last post and PM him your number instead - unfortunately a lot of unscrupulous marketers and suchlike farm details like that off webforums.

Just my 2p anyway :) Cool thread!

Lozzd, it's not as hard as you'd think you know. Geobloke is doing a swap now, and i did mine with Nobber last year. def a two man job though, unless you've got 4 hands. I would'nt mess with the gears my self i just got a 1:2 box off flebay and whacked it in :)

How much did that cost you ken110? I'm quietly confident I may actually be able to cope with that. It's seriously tempted.
The only thing that worries me is that you dont really know the condition of the transfer box until you put it in... Is that an issue really? Or do they not tend to break down?
