AVM fwh removal and service

following my recent success with the rear bearings i am now turning my attention to the front wheel bearings .

The only problem i can see is that i have an old set of AVM fwh fitted , now I'm guessing they are not to hard to remove the only thing that worries me is putting it back together and can i still get hold of the right seals / gaskets for the hubs .

has any one got any fitting instructions or a service guide as i would like to give the hubs a once over before i refit them .
 
I repaired a pair to put on my new axle with disc brackes and it's not a dificult job. If the hubs are in working conditions you just need a gastket for the cover (the 6 screws to open and remove it) and maybe a seal ring if yoy want to be sure that will be no leaks afer.
It seems more difficult that it is if you remove any piece carefully and take a lot os photos.

Yes i have sent there UK distributor an email but so far no reply .
I'm sure its not that hard to do, but you no there is going to be some sort of dirty great big spring holding all the parts under tension and when i undo the bolts its all going to shoot across the garage .

I have a pdf for Kit RTC8021 + RTC 8022 for SIIa, III free wheeling hubs. It's only 4 pages worth if thats any use to anyone. Don't know what difference there are to the AVM/kits Nos

I know that worry well daz - considers use of welding mask, gloves - body armour etc (and cricket box !).

I have Selectro FWH and the spring tension is slight - you can push the hub centre in with one hand whilst undoing the three retaining screws comfortably - but I know not about AVMs. The spring on mine is only there to hold the driving flange of the FWH away from the halfshaft when 'disconnected' and thus is only pushing the alloy flange.

Their Brazil plant might be worth contacting direct.
 
my mate seems to think he has a something on his computer about AVM hubs , will chase him again later and let you know .
 
You may want to keep your FWH, but in my humble opinion they are pretty useless.

I removed them from both my S1 (s3 axles) and all my previous series trucks. I saw no change in the performance/noise/fuel consumption of the vehicle, plus i never had any further issues with top swivel lubrication, nor did i ever forget to engage them again!

My view is that they are a triumph of marketing over reality!
 
Easy enough to strip, some photos attached (though not completely in bits, sorry)

Hardest part is getting the split pin out if taking them off, its a bit of a tight squeeze. They are the same in principal as WARN hubs.

Undo the six screws round the edge, and ease the spring out, and the cap off. It all comes out as one, and there is a paper gasket between the edge with the screws and the main body. (cartridge paper, makes good gaskets, or cornflake packets) that gives you access to the castle nut. Remove the split pin, then undo the castle nut and remove. Dont forget the felt washer, you'll need a new one. Then undo the six bolts holding the FWH to the hub, again there is a paper gasket here, same as any other hub, standard or FWH.

There is an O ring on the inner edge of the hub body, you'll need to replace that. Any decent garage should have one, though an HGV garage may be a better bet.

Thats about it....

The PDFs mentioned above are for Fairey hubs, a totally different kettle of fish. Handy to have for reference, the innards are very much the same. I've uploaded the instructions for the Selectro hubs, they are very similar in fitting and operation.

The pair of AVM's on my S2 look a hell of alot older than those, they have heavy duty cast centers that don't look like they've ever been black and the outside flange (with the six bolts in) look more substantial on mine than newer ones I've seen - I wonder if they are very early examples, I'll have to check for any part numbers or date stamps.
 
The above were off a SIIa...I think the inners were originally red. These were working just fine, despite there being an odd screw in the head (right thread, wrong head) but were replaced with standard drive flanges.

I wonder how old your ones are? I know LR offered Fairey hubs as an 'optional extra', for IIa and III, but ones like Mayflower Automotive Products and WARN, etc. don't feature in their brochures at all. I cant see any numbers on the ones here....Or, rather, I didnt notice any. Will check on that..

LOL, I did check out AVM's website and they say they've been going since '57. Mine are definately AVM's as, like yours, AVM is cast into the center dial - I'm going to hazzard a guess at 1960, I might finally have found a part on my 1960 S2 that actually is original!!!!! :)
 
Big Sandy - I've had a closer look at mine. It seems they probably are the same size as yours but the fact that the center is natural aluminium makes them look larger. However, mine have serrations cast into both sides of the bar down the center of the dial (for extra grips for your fingers when turning it) and 'WARN USA' cast into the face of one of the recessed segments of the dial. In the other recessed segment there are some other letters and numbers but I can't make them out.
 
the pic below shows what my fwh are like if it helps.

also the guy on ebay sells that kit for the 10 spline hub as well ( tho. I cant think what seals would be different)
