Axle Compatability (90/Defender/Disco)

My 1986 Ninety's rear axle is sounding a little tired.
Add to that the fact the support for the spring seat has alomst rusted away and the pinion bearing is worm - it looks like a replacement axle is a good idea.
My 90 has drums but as long as it's just a case or rerouting brake pipes, I will happily swap to disks.

Can anyone confirm that a later Defender or a Discovery axle will be a straight swap. Also will the diff ratio be the same?

Also, I remember reading somewhere (think it may have been here) that there was a difference in the radius arm mountings for later axles.

Anyone able to shed some light on this.

And finally is there anyone local to me with a good condition suitable axle for sale (OK I realise this bit may be asking a bit much:) )

Rear axle is a straight swap.... trailing arms are interchangeable.

Diff ratio is the same on all coil sprung LR's - 3.54:1

As a "novice" when it comes to naming LR parts - are the trailing arms part of the "A frame" assembly or are they the arms that fix to the chassis with the 3 bolt bushes?

(Hope that makes sense)

The ones that go from the axle to the chassis/bush with three bolts ;)
You ideally want the thicker ones... some Disco's have the thin type fitted... which are easy to bend!!

I've just seen a description on ebay that said...

taken from 1993 200 tdi discovery. will also fit classic range rover. will convert early 90's to disc brakes.. both shocker mounts are forward facing..

Is the position of the shock absorber mounts something I need to look out for (Mines one of the very early 90's)

Yes... but all 90 dampers point forwards regardless of age and/or brake type....

Early RR's had a slightly different arrangement - one damper went forward, one when backwards.

Later RR (from around '85 onwards i think - is late:sleep: ) have the dampers facing forwards as per all Discoverys/Defenders etc etc.

Thanks for that.
Looks like my choice of donors has just opened up considerably.

So, now to find a good condition, cheap rear axle that's local:)

An added bonus perhaps is that you can then fit alloys....

I converted mine to discos - just did a swap on the rear and changed the running gear on the front. That way I didn't need to do the radius arms...

HTH.
