Must be feeling guilty or something.

Do you know if a TD5 will run ok on biodiesel. Anyone (not a farmer) bought it in bulk for home dispensing into the car?
 
The Official line from LR is that the TD5 is NOT suitable for biodiesel concentrations in excess of 5%. No doubt a large factor is the Factory covering their backsides in case people use bio, blow up their engine, then claim on the Warranty. I've never yet even come across a filling station selling bio on the pumps. If it was available, I'd use a proportion of it - provided it was cheaper than mineral diesel of course. I doubt I'd go much over 20% concentration though. I'd rather someone else, not me, finds out if bio doesn't agree with the TD5.:eek:
 
Well my hubby runs his 200tdi on bio and asked me if I wanted to try it in my Td5, he said he would buy me new injectors just incase they got clogged like they say:eek: I told him I would wait till someone else had tried bio before I used it in mine:D If you look http://www.biodieselfillingstations.co.uk/alloutlets.htm there is a list of stations round the country. We get ours at Hebden bridge I think and its just a nomal station with bio coming out the pump;)
 
I have just (200 miles ago) filled up my 200 tdi with bio diesel. Using the website Helen mentioned, went to Greetland and there was a pump on the forecourt of the filling station 89.5p per litre.
No problems at all (prob running a 70% bio 30%fossil mix). Get the occaisonal smell of donuts. Problem is Greetland is too far to make a special journey.
 
In Malta we've been using bio. I have been giving it bio at 30% to 70%, i've got a 2.5TD works brilliant and the engine is quiter. My friend is using 50% to 50% on his series 3...

Don't know about TD5 though

I run my 300TDi on Bio Diesel. At this time of year 50/50 mix and pay 74ppl for the Bio. In Late Spring Summer Early Autum I run on 100% Bio.

One thing don't confuse running on veg oil or just adding veg oil to derv as been the same as Bio Diesel.

Re the TD5 I believe there is a web site in Australia which talks more about running the TD4 and TD5 on Bio. Just cannot remember the site so try Googling it. Here are some links to look at 1 2 3 4

I'll have a look at the Aussie sites. I guess to meet emissions targets it would only need an 80/20 mix of derv to bio.
 
Hi there! I am new to this forum but would be grateful for any up-to-date advice on biodiesel in a TD5. I know that LR are unenthusiastic - in fact when I asked my dealer he claimed not even to know what biodiesel was! However I am quite often on the Continent where Biodiesel seems to be more generally available. So far I've resisted the temptation but wishing to be as green as possible whilst still towing a caravan around Europe I would like to go bio. Any advice or further experience would be most welcome.

I run at 100% with my 200Tdi with no problems

The recommendation is to put a tank through then a tank of dino juice then another tank of bio then change the fuel filter. You should then be sorted. I also carry a spare filter just in case.

A good supplier will be willing to dispense a small amount into a jar so you can check it.
 
Dick Strawbridge of "Its not easy being green" fame runs a TD5 supplied by Landrover on Biodiesel.

I have no idea if there were any modifications though but contact him through the BBC website :)

Yes Bob and I know where you get it from.

I've been running my 300TDI with no problems apart from blocked filter and that was my fault for not changing it. As Bob says just carry a spare.

You will see above the links I found before on running a TD5 on Bio.

Not sure about Dick Strawbridge of "Its not easy being green" running his Defender on it as I didn't think he had a TD5 I thought he had a N/A or 200TDI
 
I think the "It's not easy being green" Defender is a TD5. It's an 04 plate.

There was an article in LROI last month about the TD5 engine. It said the injectors were tested using kerosene and the engine was sold to the US Army on the basis it would run on jet fuel. So why won't confirm more than, I think, 5% biodiesel as ok?
 
my 54 90 and the 52 disco have run on biodiesel from new no problems with the disco nothing engine wise with the defender but there serviced regular and get a bottle of injector cleaner once a month and seam to be fine

Thats good to know.

What injector cleaner are you using. I was thinking about this and wonder if it was safe to mix with Bio?
 
we buy from rix petrolum but then were buying about 10 000 litres at a time for the trucks but have looked at the possibility of making it from osr we grow

I'm more into 100 litres at a time. I've contacted an outfit called Vridine not far away. That's the minimum quantity they do. Subject to price I'll probably buy 100 litres and try it but probably as a mix with DERV.

It would be nice to put a sticker on the car announcing that it's greener than thou!
