Brakes squeaking when driving

Henk Coetzee

Overdrive!
I have had an intermittent issue with my front brakes. They squeak when not engaged. Touch the brake pedal and the squeak goes away. Some days it's worse than others.

I may be imagining things, but I suspect that this goes away for a while if I get them good and wet, although driving to work in the rain this morning seems not to have made much difference.

Any ideas?

Henk

The pad will be rubbing against the disc. Nothing much to worry about, you can get anti-rattle shims, but doesn't matter too much if you can put up with the noise!

Henk,
I'd be inclined to look at the pads first. Is there a piece of grit embedded in the material which is adding a new groove to one of your disks? Failing which I would suspect a caliper piston is sticking very slightly.
Good luck

Jon

also check that the pad has not fallen into the calliper and riding on the shoulder of the disc. Take the wheel off, look around the shoulder of the disc - if you see a grove here, there are a couple of things that could be wrong.

1 - Calliper is knackered and not keeping the pads in correct position.
2 - Pad's are wrong ones for the model of the car

What a load of pants .... there's something wrong that needs looked at, if the noise just started, best get it looked before there's to much damage caused. Last thing you want is brakes to fail whilst on the motorway tramping along at 70 mph - then discover you aint got any brakes!!!

I had the same problem which got worse as the pads wore. On inspection I discovered one pad worn more than the others. The cause was one of the bars on which the caliper slides was cross threaded resulting in these not sitting parallel and the caliper jamming and not correctly returning when the brakes were applied as a result leaving one pad rubbing on the disc. As the pads wore more the problem got worse.
