Buying a used 110. What to look after?

Splinter

Soo.

Evening!

So,in short, I´m preparing here to buy a used 110 from germany (they are 1/3 the price there than here in scandihoovia) and I am now in the process to learn what to look after when buying a used.

The specs will be that my budget is <7000€ with wich i will/could get a 96/97 car with 160.000km-190.000km in the meter.. If some Gynther hasnt been fondling with the tacho..

In short I am not a professional mechanic, but a relatively handy person, that finally has some own space where i can do tinkering. I have/have had some 4wd vehicles in the past, but nothing like Defender (with the reputation of being a tinkers dream) so this is a bit new world.
The stuff that i would mod on the car would be a small lift (2"?), snorkels, painting, underarmor and a winch at some point. The car would be the 2nd/everyday car/tool for me and my wife.

So:

A.What to look for ?
B.What to expect?

Thanks in advance for a good forum and reading!

Best advice i can give is join a Land Rover club , get to know some people they will give you loads of advice . Dont be in a rush to buy one ,
take your time .
Good luck .

If a club is not an option then the main problems are to do with corrosion in the chassis and the bulkhead (sometimes called the firewall). Next thing is play in the drivetrain. This is noticable by banging when taking up drive. There is always some in a land rover but if you cannot drive without making a clunk at all, then there are problems. The gearbox and the axles are the main sources of the problems. The next thing is excessive smoke when starting. They all smoke when first started due to the 2 stage injectors but any continual smoke can be a problem if its really bad. A TDI and TD5 should both start instantly or near instantly so thats usually an indicator. Finally check when the timing belt was last changed and service history etc.

If a club is not an option...

Djgg and HPLP, I´m afraid that it is a bit hard to get into the local clubs, but as i dont know,i might as well call around if i would get some helpfull pointers. Especially getting some "hands on" time with the particular problmem areas would be helpfull. I have few days of driving experience with the defenders, but not any tech experience, so yeah, every bit of advice is appreciated!!!

What are the particular weak points? No experience with any aluminium chassised vehicles before so this is a really, really dark area..

Next thing is play in the drivetrain. This is noticable by banging when taking up drive. There is always some in a land rover but if you cannot drive without making a clunk at all, then there are problems.

While getting moving up or during the drive? What about the low range, any particular problems there? And what about in the locks? Is there any easy ways to check that things are working properly? I doubt that the local cardealers are happy if I take the car for a few hours drive and sink it to a bog..

The gearbox and the axles are the main sources of the problems.

Any visible clues,or you have to go and drive to get the feel?

Ok. So a the normal thing that you have with any diesel engine? Any specific and known problems with the 96/97 diesels?

Finally check when the timing belt was last changed and service history etc.

Ok.

And super thanks for the pointers!
I appreciate it a lot!!
