central locking rear door driver side

deakdeak

In Second Gear
My 1999 series II rear passenger door drivers side central locking no longer works. I like to know if a common fault exists before pulling the door apart and if so what spare parts will be needed.

Not sure if it's a common fault but the same door on my 99MY DII has started playing up. Sometimes it opens with the other doors but other times the button only comes up half way and it requires another press of the button. Just waiting for it to pack in altogther.

Graeme.

Hi
I have the disco 1 tdi and V8 and both of them do the same.....and like deakdeak said........"Just waiting for it to pack in altogther"

Cheers

Mine has the same symptoms. First it needed another push of the remote to open (during approx. 10 months), now it stopped working at all.

The solanoid controlling the back door lock has probably packed up. Take the trim off and see if the solanoid lever moves up and down when you press the central locking button.

Solanoid packed up on my car too - the back door solanoid made a continuous whinning noise for about ten minutes, even when the engine was switched off the solanoid kept churning, it never worked since. I took the solanoid out and now the central locking only works on two doors - the drivers and the back passenger door. I got a quote on a new solanoid for the back door and it was something like $150 AU, so I figure its cheaper to just lock the door by hand.

Also try and save as many of the red clips as you can when your removing the trim as the landrover ones are bloody expensive for what they are - just like the solanoid.

If it doesn't work AT ALL, isn't there a spring inside the lock that breaks? I've seen replacements on Ebay, but I understand they aren't nice to do! I'm not sure whether the series II has the same lock mechanism has the series I though.

I have the same problem with my '99 Disco 2. That particular door has, more often than not, had to have a 'double press' on the remote to open fully for something like three or four years now! Never got any worse and the only failure (to the same door) was the linkage coming adrift.

I believe the problem is associated with the solenoid/lock mechanisim for which I have sourced a suitable spare but haven't got round to fitting it yet - only had the part a couple of years, there's still time...

On the Series 2 Discos, it is not the weak spring problem as mentioned earlier - this is confined to the Series 1s.

This door lock problem is well known on the Series 2 Discos and is also normally the same door i.e. rear, drivers side. When I first got my car, all the locks opened at different times - it was amusing listening to the doors open round the car! I had a couple of solenoids replaced under warranty because they were slow but apparently Land Rover stopped that and would only authorise a replacement for a failure.

Replacement of the solenoid, should you need to do is, is very straight forward and not a lengthy job.

I think you may get away with a bit of lubrication on the linkages.
If the spring goes it usually means the lock doesn't work at all on the fob.
You will find replacing the first spring is difficult..It gets easier the more you do:D ....By the time you have done all five you will be an expert:D

Yup - just did my RRC's 2 back doors this weekend - replaced the springs as the buttons would come up 1/2 way, but not unlock the doors - had to reach in and manually do it....

First one took 4 hours, second 1 an hour. Get a very small set of needle nose pliers - that's the trick with it.

When you've goe to the effort of getting the lock out (I ended up with the impact driver's assistance), take the time to clean it properly - it's amazing how much gunk can get in there - soak it liberally in WD40, tooothbruch all 'brass' surfaces, and then give it a good coat in Lithium grease - worked a treat for mine!
