Charge Light On - when ignition off ??!?!??

dickierees

In Second Gear
Anyone understand why my '89 90 with a 2.5 petrol might suddenly decide to switch the charge/alternator warning light on - when the ignition is off ??? The light goes out when ignition turned and engine running !!! Going to leave it over night to see if it's a problem....but a little alarming !!

Any help welcome...and Happy NY.....

Broken voltage regulator in the alternator? Cheap part, and simple to replace.

Marcus, thanks -- will nip to dunsfold tomorrow and see if they have one there......think that when they replaced the engine for me --- with this current one - they suggested that the alternator may need a bit of tlc......

cheers

If its the ignition switch, DO NOT under any circumstances get a Britpart one as ive had 2 scary experiences from them!

Had a similar problem with mine, cleaned up and rewired all the connections and has worked OK since. **touches wood***

thanks all - unfortunately didn't see these until today - and guess what --- battery flat but thankfully no fire.......going to jump start today and take down to Dunsfold LR A&E ! Will update with fix (hopefully cheap!)

now i had thought of a cut off switch !!!

i have noticed a smell occurring - just thought something may be running hot - but couldn't reliably find the source.....

anyway, got the old chap jump started and he made the 8 mile journey to DLR (i wish i had myown garage !! - and some basic skill)....so a bit of surgery tomorrow and hopefully all well (touch rust!).
