Cost of a 72k mile service!?!!!!!!

Hello fellow Freelandarians :)

I am a newbie here, and I hope you dont mind if I ask a question, as I am not really very technical when it comes to cars (though I did learn to pop the bonnet the other day by myself :) )

My Freelander (2.5 V6 X Reg) is due for its 72k service, and apparently this is a biggie because of the Cam belt? I have no idea what one of those is, but it had better be very important because my local dealer (Sturgess, Leicester) have quoted me £995    . Mrs Plough (the car) has only done 42k in actual milage, which makes it sting even more!

As I said, I am not really very up on cars, but it does seem a bit, well, steep really! (Some very bad words came out of my mouth when he gave me the quote :o ).

Would anyone know anywhere localish to Leicester that could do it for a better price? If its the going rate fair enough, but I am not exactly trusting Sturgess on thier value for monet at the moment!

Thank you all very much for your help,

Vickie

PS - I hope this is in the right place, and sorry if I am asking stupid questions!

The Timing belts ( all 3 of them) are not a nice job to do, plus the kit to lock the sprockets and remove the rear belts costs about £250, (so the money needs recouping somewhere, you just add £££s a job for tool rental)

If one belt fails, you are talking a lot of money for engine damage repairs, plus you still need the belts.

You need to ring round for prices, most people won't touch them, though. As you will see from the attachment, the estimated time for the job is 6.60 hours ( X £80 or so =....)

Which, out of interest, Rover recommend 96,000 miles...

Hello Vickie, welcome to the forum :)

The 72k is a biggie, as you say because of the cambelt. If the cambelt goes because it has not been renewed at the correct interval, a very large amount of internal (fatal!) damage can be done to the engine. It's important to do and it takes quite a few hours' labour.

Unofrtunately LR main dealers have the most expensive labour charges per hour, hence the big quote. It will be a lot cheaper done by a local trusted independent LR specialist

Right then, so I take it this will be a 'ring-round-for-lots-of-quotes-and-try-not-to-swear' mission!

Thank you for your help - from what you have siad it does look a big job. Doesnt stop me hoping that the £60 in my 'car emergency' fund still might cover it though :)

I will just have to find a specilist then!

... and the Belts are due at 96,000.

Someone is taking the Micheal.

I'd ask them to explain themselves.

Chris for a petrol the LR service sheet gives:

Poly V ancillary drive belt 96k
Cambelt 72k

(Diesel Poly V, cambelt and rear fuel injection belts every 48k)

The 1.8 is 72,000, Bernie.

The Autodata book gives 96,000 for the KV6. on Rover and MG.
I'll check again on the new Book at work, in case it's a misprint in the 2003 version.

Chris

Just looking at the Data book, and there are some discrepencies, Bernie.

The MGF K series 1.8 is 60,000

the Rover and Freelander K 1.8s are 72,000

The MPi in the Discovery is 96,000, in the Rover cars it is 60,000.

I would go with your 72,000, to be safe, though. Better safe than sorry. I will check up on Monday though, Bad information is no good to anyone.

Ohhhh, a 'red envelope' next to my first ever post on the post list - I am pleaseed!!

I'm learning alot from this site - I had no idea cars needed sooooo many belts!

Got mine done at 72,000, Most independants I contacted don't really want to know, because its a major job and the the tools are the best part of 300 quid, I think the belts are nearly £200 for the 3, I used it as a bargaining tool for buying the car, obviously no good to you now though, It cost me £500 at main dealers for the belts only,Apparently they drop the whole front subframe engine assy and do it that way. Then the rest you can do yourself or get an indie to it a reasonable rate.Hope you enjoy the freebie after this introduction,Best of luck Andy
