Cracked Clutch Damper

Little John

In Second Gear
Hi
Putting this up for my other half as he has had to go back to work in a huff! First time posting a thread so be gentle.
Story so far..lost clutch pedal in Tesco's carpark on Christmas Eve and haven't been able to get part until today. When we had a look over Christmas it was the Damper that was spraying fluid out of it so we ordered a new part (I know you can bypass it but felt putting it back on as it was there in the first place). Put on with minimum of swearing. We started to bleed the system to get the pedal back, got half way there and then suddenly lost it again completely. Managed to test that it did go into gear before that so know it must be in the hydraulic system somewhere that the problem lies. John (the other half) thought that the pipes into the Damper weren't in tight enough and when he went to check found that it was indeed leaking around the Damper. He fiddled about and couldn't stop the leak so took it all off again and when he checked the Damper it had 3 cracks on the outer casing. We have rung up the supplier and they will get another one in for us for tomorrow as it shouldn't have happened. We are hoping it is a faulty part but were wondering..Could something else be causing too much pressure in the Damper and making it blow? We have checked the Master and the Slave cylinders (as much as you can) but they look fine and we did get some pressure and gear change before it went again. Can anyone shed some light on this? It would be very much appreciated as we have tried everything else.
Hope someone can give us an answer and thanks in advance to those who do. Have used forums loads of times for answers and managed to find them already on here. First time we have had to ask!

Pretty sure its just a faulty part. As long as pedal feels same once its bled then i wouldnt think there are any other problems.

Thanks for that. We were both sure it was just the part but you start to worry as the previous damper just popped the top off (Couldn't think of any other way of putting that!) and was there another reason for so much pressure to do that. Hopefully tomorrow we can just put the part on and be done with it.

Thanks again

Is it still the large round lump about 2" diameter, used to be used on Rover cars?

If it is, they always split around the bottom edge.

Yes that is the part but ours split around the other edge..where it bolts on and the lines go in. Just worried that there is a secondary problem and it is being hidden by the Damper. Spoke to someone today who said the first old one could have got moisture in it over the recent cold weather and then froze causing it to burst. Is there anything else that could cause back pressure to blow the Damper?

The only time I've had it is when the clutch is worn and the diaphragm spring fingers are right back and take a lot of pushing. If it's done it on 2 of them, something is wrong. They are pretty tough things. ( apart from the thin corners, of course... :) )
