How Do I? crankcase pressure

redhand

Big Landy Fan
Hi I'm trying to sell my 110, but a bloke came to look at it and said the rings have gone. Because if you remove the dipstick from the tube, while the engine is running a fine spray of oil comes out of the dipstick tube. and if you remove the oil filler cap smoke comes out of it.

My brother who's a mechanic said that it is probably thick oil and a blocked crankcase breather. as the car as been parked up since I got it in Jan 2005, with the exception of three long runs, one in June 2005 from North Wales to Northants, one in Oct 2005 from Northants to Torquay and the last trip in sept 2006 from Torquay to Hull. The oil hasn't been changed while I've had it.

So the question is which one of them is likely to be right and is there a way to check the crankcase breather. Whoops nearly forgot it is a 2.5NA diesel

If you take the oil filler cap off and oil mist comes out, then you do have problems... With the filler cap off have you seen if oil comes out of your dip stick hole?
You certainly have crankcase pressure by the sounds of things.. do you loose much oil? Is your engine bay is awash with the stuff?

Not tried it with cap off and dipstick out at same time. there is a bit of oil round the base of dipstick tube and round rocker cover but not loads!!

As I said earlier I drove it back from Torquay to Hull approx 350miles and never noticed any problems, overheating or power loss. and didn't lose any oil during the trip. My Brother thinks the oil is old and filthy and that this is causing the problem. he suggested using flushing oil and running the engine for a while then replacing with new oil.

Smoke coming out of the crankcase is from the bores, worn rings or bore.

It depends how much there is, no engine is free from blowby, new ones still get a bit pass the gap in the rings. If you rev the engine and the dipstick flys out, that is worn....

Too high a sump level will blow oil mist out the dipstick hole, Lower the level to midway.

If the breather is blocked, you wil get oil leaks from everywhere.

It's not that bad that the dipstick fly out. As said earlier drove it from torquay without any problems. But did top it up to max on dipstick before setting off. So will try draining it and changing oil & filter to see if that helps I'm off to Hull 2moro and I'm going to be there till Tues night so I'm going to see if I can figure out what's causing it.
