Daft newbie question!

In Second Gear
Hi, can anyone tell me the reason why you should'nt fit new tyres to the front axle of a Freelander, unless you put new ones on the back axle as well? Whats the worst that can happen?
If I get a puncture on a front wheel should I put the new spare on the back and then put the worn back on the front?..........HELP!

Because by putting new ones on the front you are increasing the differential between the 2 axles and potentially overloading the VCU, leading to a possible expensive failure.
However in the case of a puncture, yes you could do it, but only for a short distance.

As LR says, put the new ones, in pairs, on the back.

As Graham says, the front wheels drive at a slightly higher gearing than the rears to give a feeling of a front wheel drive car. If you put new tyres on the front, the diameter is larger so amplifies the effect and the VC works harder (by slipping), so possibly causing seizure.

does this go for later freelanders?i read somewhere that 2001? onwards had slightly different ratios to address this type of issue? if i'm wrong is it ok to have a single new tyre on the rear or pairs only?do we still do the thing that our dads used to do and cross over tyres periodically front left to rear right etc etc?? or is the best rule of thumb to keep the "lowest" tread on the fronts as equal as we can?

Applies to all Freelanders, and pairs are recommended, otherwise you can get a difference in grip characturistics on the same axle.
And no there is no point in "circulating" tyres now.

Chris/Graham,

Is that just particular to the Freelander or all permanent 4x4s?

AJ

Just the Freelander. They have slightly different ratios for front and rear gearing.

All the others have equal diff ratios.

Hi Guys, this is a bit worrying to me, does this mean I have to change all 4 tyres when one fails? This seems excessive. I have a front tyre that loses air slowly, and as a result is starting to show wear on the outside edges, and will soon need replacing. The other 3 are fine, the spare is unused. What do you suggest?

Good evening Ch1mp, please excuse the question, but how old is your freebie and where did you get it, what model is it etc, reason for asking is that it looks just like my old one, would be interested to know
best regards

Is it your old one?

Hi Ch1mp, thanks for the reply, but it ain't my old one, shame that, could have filled you in about it, traded mine in for an HSE in black, and wondered where mine went to, mine was an 03, "DG03 FSZ" up here in Chester, dealer said he sold it into the trade as they were trying to shift the new shape in preparation for the Freebie 2 and said he didn't want it cluttering up his pitch!!!!- I can tel you that mine was in absolutely pristine condition with only 20,000 miles full service etc etc etc-cluttering up!!!! what a ******, ah well would like to find out where it went, so if anyone knows please get in touch
Cheers
maffy.
