Has anyone else been watching this program on the Discovery channel?

I have been, and it certainly shows how dangerous fishing can be when out at sea. Even during the making of the series, the odd fishing boat and crew do go down with the vessel. :(

Our neighbour goes out in all weathers for lobster and crab and one side of me sez I would love to go along for the experience - but then again:rolleyes:

cheers, Tim

I read an article in National Geographic about these guys and it seemed to be a tough job. Having watched the series it is a very tough job and they deserve every cent that they earn

Father and eldest brother sailed trawlers out of Hull in the 70's. They were in the same area as the Gaul when she went down. All th fishermens wives had a protest demo and chained thmselves to the lockgates because so many trawlers were going down an so many lives were been lost. All the trawlers owners were interested in were profits for them it was a no lose situation. If the trawler came back they got all the profits from the catch, and if it didn't they got the insurance. and the crews relatives got peanuts. some of those trawlermen worked for the same companies for 20/30 years and then got laid off without a penny in redundancy pay.

Yep, I watch both series the first time round. ;)
Very good series, although the first was a little more dramatic than the second IMHO but when you see the amount of ice those boat take onboard when they head up towards the pack-ice  that really makes for hard work.

Redhand,
Things have got alot better since the 70's in this country. All fishing vessels are now inspected, they have to carry the correct safety gear for their size and number of crew, some carry transponders as well as satellite beacons. There are the fisheries patrol vessels out there with them, checking on the safety of the vessels as well as what they catch and communications are far better now.

We still loose vessels, of all types, each year as well as crew members and it is still one of, if not the, most dangerous job going. But accidents will happen and all we can do is try our best to prevent them in the first place and when they do happen, do our upmost to limit or prevent loss of live.

Oh I know things are better now. Back then maybe 5 or 6 companies owned all the trawlers sailing out of Grimsby and Hull and all the trawler men were classed as temporary staff so they could hire and fire as they saw fit. I went to meet the old man in once and the whole bridge structure had been pushed back nearly a foot after it had been hit by a wave.

Yup watched some of them, the one where they were going out in a snow storm for crab and the traps were icing up...

Is earnning a doller really worth risking your life??

Cheers

Yep, had a few of those up here, one smashed the bridge windows and sucked the skipper and all the radio, radar and emergency gear overboard. It also swamped the engine room and crew accomodation.
Press releases from the incident are here and here with a summery here. ;)

And as if to prove a point I came into work this morning and this one was on the go. But this was a good outcome, both boat and crew safe.

One of the last few Fleetwood trawlers is going to Scotland, the Dell Brothers cannot get a crew for one of their Boats. Steve is a Customer of ours, he has one Trawler, his brother the other, they just cannot get anyone.

A lot of the fleet went to Hull and Grimsby years ago. There should be a lot of Fleetwood folk there, as they moved with the Boats.

Not in Hull anymore. The fishing in Hull died in the 80's after the icelandic codwars. most of the fishing docks in Hull have been filled in and a huge retail park built on top of them. We still get the odd trawler in (mainly Russian Factory ships.) but probably about 1% of what it used to be.
