General Diesel Tachometer fitting to a 200 TDI with alternator

It can be done but need a cleverer man than I, put a 200 TDI in my Series but thinking of a tacho to give ideas on gearing. Tacho clocks are inexpensive but how to get a pulse to them 🤔 and calibrate ? I have heard a lead off the alternator or a magnetic sensor on flywheel but anyone done a clever fix ? Thanks in advance.

Most modern alternators have a ‘W’ terminal which can feed pulses to a tacho.
Calibration isnt rocket surgery if you take your time.

I do have a Lazer Tachometer to get started with. But W terminal ? Is that the smaller one of the three ?

Depends which alternator you have, but most of them are marked 'W'.

Yours is most likely an A127...
