Disco II model options..

mmaddock

In Fourth Gear
Been looking around, but I can't seem to find a decent list of tech specs for the various models of the TD5 DII. Most info I find is American and probably not relevant to the UK models. Given my budget I'll probably be looking pre 2000 if that makes any difference?!

What I really want to know is...

Which models have 7-seats? (Is the 'S' considered the 'base' model with only 5-seats & coils on the rear, or is there a lower model with no model insignia?)

Which models (as standard) have ACE? HDC? Air-con? (Dual-zone air con?!) Do they all have 4-wheel traction control?

Basic list of mechanical (I'm not too bothered about cosmetic) differences between the XS / GS and ES would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Matt

E very base model steel wheels

S low spec model with alloys

GS getting there cloth trim, maybe roofs

XS plenty toys strange interior colours bit like Freelander, usually 2 manual roofs, air con

ES all the toys, climate, leather, elec roofs, seats, powerfold mirrors, well everything really.

ES Premium same as ES bit more wood and Lighstone leather seats.

But all the above is irrelevant as i have seen E models with climate and roofs and GS with nothing!

Buy the best you can as if it has not got something you will end up spending a small fortune to get all the bits.

Ace mainly on higher spec models

Traction on all and i think HDC to

Mainly 7 seater models

7 seats means air susp and maybe ACE but not always

All mechanicals are the same apart from auto/manual box

all manuals have R380 box same as 300 model

Some transfer boxs have difflock others not

Dual zone heating/air con applies to side to side ie passenger and driver and is std on all 300 and TD5 models

Rear air con is quite rare but really good

Some have normal air con others climate control which is just air con with a brain.

Thanks for those replies. Kind of echos what I've seen on eBay - they seem to vary so much! I guess I'm just going to have to make sure I know what is included on the one I eventually buy - tho looking at the eBay descriptions, half the time I reckon people don't know what they have in their own vehicles!

I just wanted to know if there were specific models that included ACE / Air-con (climate - either, anything that makes it cold!) TC and 7 seats "as standard" as they are the options I really want.

What I'm more confused about is that I've seen a couple of XS models with only 5 seats??! My understanding was that all but the base model had 7.

I'd like the ES, just concerned that prices may be a bit high (as everyone is probably chasing the ES's) compared to lower models that may have all I need. I'll see what comes up!

Is there anything in particular to look out for that is ££££ to fix? I'm quite happy to do most work myself. I don't want to be spending out a fortune in garage bills - but I'm sure there is a lot less I can do myself than on the 2/300 series. AIUI most problems are electrical. Air suspension can be problematic I know, but I'm a dab hand at fixing that after the P38!! Is there any way to tell if the oil pump bolts have been changed? what model year did they fix this issue properly on?

Cheers,

Matt

Matt I sent a spec sheet to you email link on your sales site ,sorry I couldnt post it here but having server problems, maybe you can sent it for all to see
hope this helps

I have a friend ho's selling 2 Discovery's II , Both cars are from the Ambassy, there RHD but there in Belgium , so they sell them at a real bargain. one car is a Disco II first used 10/2003 but build 2002 ,this car is a Full oprion car , it has all the options you can get, dual airco, traction controle , tan leather , air suspension, Harman cardonn sound system a really as new car has got about 28000 miles, the second one is a 2000 model with 20000 miles also like new condition , this model is called XS plus this is a model with aircon ,1/2 leather but no airsuspension, this car is a green one , (I bought the third disco they had also a XS plus iam converting it to LHD now as it was a bargain with that kind of miles and condition) if you want can send yo his phone number ,I did buy my 2000 model XS plus from him with genuine 22000 miles for about 6500£ , i Put a 1700 euro LPG system in the car so now its cheaper to run then my wife's VW Golf .
Well I just love my discovery , hope to do a lot of miles in it.

Hi guys

I,m looking at buying a 2003 ES or a landmark model. Does anyone know where the landmark fits into the model specs

thanks and regards (first timer)

Paul

Landmark has full leather (but with manual seats rather than the electric ones on an ES), climate control, twin roofs, CD autochanger under drivers seat and extra stereo amplifier under passenger seat (Not Harman Kardon though). Has parking sensors, power-fold mirrors and electric heated front screen.
Only available as 7 seat version so has self-levelling suspension (No ACE). Has traction control & Hill Descent Control, no diff-lock though.

I think that's everything, but if you've any other questions about spec I'll go outside and have a look...

regards, Nick

I am confused now. The insurance company has my TD5 as a GS model but it has:
6 cd changer under seat
full leather electric seats
Wood dash
climate control (dual sided)
twin sunroofs
18" alloys
Heated screens
ACE
Air suspension

Which puts it in ES premium bracket. It is a 2000 W model

Thanks Nick

The ES model seems a little harder to come by and I have seem a couple of landmarks for sale, would you recommend the landmark or hold out for an ES

regards

Paul

With all this just remember, that when the vehicle was built it could well have had different options added to it. Also the standard/options list can (and does) change each year, so what was an option one year, may be standard the next.

Also just because the sales guy at the LR dealer says you have to have this trim level to have a certain feature - that may only be because marketing have said so.

Also don't forget those special editions - sometimes these can be as simple as - all S spec vehicles will get ACE untill 31st Dec 20XX etc.

Also (and hopefully finally) as you get towards a big change point - facelift or new vehicle - you start running low on parts on the production line, so it might be agreed to up spec the final x number of vehicles from say normal speakers to premium speakers - because they have lots of premium speakers and harness and harness in stock and not many normal ones.... Most people don't complain about getting up-spec'd, or these cars can just be built and issued to vehicle operations department - they'd then go onto the second hand market when a couple of years old

Paul, I've been very happy with my Landmark - it has everything on it I wanted, except ACE. I thought I'd really notice the lack of ACE and was a bit concerned about it when I bought it, but the car handles really well anyway once you adapt to the weight you're throwing around.
The electric seats of the ES are height adjustable, which the manual ones are not, but I'm 6' 1" so I don't need them anyway, though it might be an advantage for some. The ES premium has an uprated stereo, but mine sounds plenty good enough for me, and I'm not bothered about the extra air-con unit in the back as one is enough for me. The only external differences are the external rubbing strips with the chrome inserts and the wheels.
I wouldn't worry about the satnav of the ES as its now a bit outdated now.

For the price differential between a Landmark and an ES personally I think the Landmark is better value, but it just depends whether you want the extra toys, and if I were buying again I'd get a Landmark.

ps. There's also the metropolis, which was a late model equivalent of the ES Premium.

pps. If you're planning on doing lots of off roading I think the ES has a centre diff lock, but it might have been an option and this would need to be checked.

I am confused now. The insurance company has my TD5 as a GS model but it has:

full leather electric seats
Wood dash
climate control (dual sided)

It will be a GS,you can pay for all those options and it looks like the original purchaser did, lucky you.
For example,ACE and the 18" alloys are a "Sports Pack".

Regards,
Nick.

Hi Nick

Again thanks for the info. I'm a lot wiser now re models etc. I would prefer the ES i think just because its the top model, but a little pricy. I will probably go for the landmark. I missed an 2002 ES in northern ireland at £8995 and its equivalent in gatwick, though nicer interior is £11,995 some difference.

regards

Paul
