Discovery 2 - 3 amigos fixed! By accident.

This is a bit of an unconventional thread but I thought it might help some people out with the dreaded 3 amigos.

So little bit of background; I have a disco 2 2003 TD5 that I bought in the summer this year, it had a dead battery when I got it but it had been stood for a few months so that didn't worry me too much. Jump started it to get it home and then bought a new battery and all was well.
I was pre warned by the previous owner that he had an intermittent issue with the 3 amigos occasionally but every time the popped up it was a case of the classic "turn it off and on again" so something was most likely on it's way out but he couldn't figure out what it was because the codes were saying "ABS shuttle valve" even after changing said valve.

Sure enough I had the same issues after a few weeks but off and on again got rid of the lights and all was good. More recently the amigos became more and more frequent and more and more persistent to the point that some days they would be on all day from first set off to last arrival but they were still intermittent and some journeys would be trouble free.

2 days ago I got a battery warning light on the dash pop up when sat at a set of lights that disappeared once I brought the revs above 2k and reappeared on idle. Put my alternator tester on and sure enough the alternator was in a bad way, still working here and there but obviously poorly. So yesterday I changed the alternator and got that back online and now also the amigos are no more...

With a bit of logical thinking what I believe has happened is that the alternator has been on it's way out since I got it, getting gradually worse over time (brushes worn out I'm assuming) due to this it has caused voltage drops and surges that has upset the SLABS ECU and triggering the amigos. After changing the alternator the voltage is stable, SLABS is happy and the amigos are no more. Happy days for me!

Sorry if this is an obvious one to some of you serious Land Rover experts but I thought it was a little unconventional and that it might help out others who are currently pulling their hair out haha.

Hi Richie, Thanks for the info. Out of interest what sort of alternator tester did you use to show the fault.
Cheers,
Griff
Not sure on brands or even where it came from to be honest but it's just a cheap Chinese bit of kit

Also did some checks with my multi meter but this thing is idiot proof hahah

A decent thought 👍 we had same soonish after buying some years ago..
But a garage fed a line somehow & not returned...oddly the alternator has been replaced after the garage work..
