discovery axles under a 110, good or bad idea?

In Third Gear
Hey all,

I have an option of buying a disco (1996 I think) with ratty body but good engine and gearbox.

My old 84 110 with its 10 spline axles need changing out for 24 spline type while I am ripping it apart.

So my question is, will disco axles off a 96 300tdi fit my 110 and more importantly, are they strong enough to handle the 110 weight?....how many splines they got?......can I use my 110 wheels on them?

I ask because I hear people say not to put 90 axles under a 110 or you'll bust em. I dont want to take the risk out of ignorance.

Bought a new TD5 bulkhead today, got fed up looking at used ones with too much work needed, and the guys asking silly money. Doors are the next expense so if anyone out there has two front doors and a rear door complete with all their bits....drop me a note.

We are all bloody nuts to be working on these old landies....but not as nuts when you work on old 1920's diesel engines too!

Thanks for that mate, I take it I am ok with the front.

The existing rear on the 110 is a drum brake and it would be nice if I could upgrade it in some fashion. I think the inner splines on the rear are not 24 and open to anyone with some info on those.

Do you know if the most recent 110s run the salisbury? as i am sure i've read somewhere they don't, mind you i could be wrong and its all a delusion bought on by getting my 90 back on the road............keith

I believe. Only believe  that they run a Dana axle the same as a Santana PS110. Land Rover seem very cagey about who actually makes tha axle :D

you'll also need to get a longer prop shaft to compensate for the shorter diff nose.. I looked into getting one of these props done and they wernt cheap, just got another axle to replace the broken one:)
