Enabling Ambient External Temperature Sensor

Lovel

Accelerating Away
Found this option available for the Freelander 1 while thumbing through T4 the other day.

I enabled this option which seems to be available for the North American market only for some reason.
T4 screenshot showing options that can be enabled by clicking on the IPK temp sensor changed to "enabled".
T4 then goes through a series of screens which eventually rewrites the LCS coding.

Once enabled the IPK shows -30 for the moment, as there is no sensor connected.

The wiring appears to be present at least behind the instrument pack, but I need to investigate further. The sensor in the bumper is not fitted I do know that at least.

Once I establish the existance of any other wiring in the harness and obtain an exernal temperature sensor I'll update the post and eventually make a proper how to. If the existing wiring is not run all the way to the front of the car it would be relatively easy to remove the wire from connector CO230-pin 18, running a wire from this connector direct to the sensor and also including an earth lead.

Ok its' been a while, but today I finally got the sensor installed.
I obtained a external temp sensor JTF000180 and also went to the scrappy to obtain a two pin connector, the same connector was found on a Rover 75, Indeed the Rover 75 connector is a different part number but has the same resistance readings so i would imagine will work too.

Harness taken from Rover 75 for the connector.

Result... Take a few miles driving to go from -30 and stabilise to Ambient. Job Done.
The Snowflake icon goes off at 4degC

Apologies in dragging up an old thread but having got all the bits n pieces... Where do I plug the other end of the loom?? I have the sensor plugged in and the loom run across the slam pannel as above but where do I connect it into the car?? Cheers Dan

There is a rubber grommet with a nipple that can be cut to feed the harness through on the near side engine bay bulkhead. It is tucked away in the corner under the engine bay fuse box which needs to be unbolted to access it.

more detail attached

Hello friends. I want to ask can I use an other car sensore in my case bmw sensore becouse I think it's same function and connection is simple. 2 wires. One ground and one to cluster for signal??

Bearing in the mind that winter has now arrived in southerly parts of the UK here is a timely reminder for this simple and inexpensive modification that Land Rover should have fitted to UK models in the first place.

T4 is suitable for all Facelift Freelander models 1.8, TD4 and KV6.

T4 is the Landrover official dealer tool for diagnostics, fault finding and of course configuring vehicles that have had a replacement ECU fitted etc. Lots of main dealers should have them as well as a number of independent specialists. I would say they would charge you something like £40 for a session to enable the feature. You could also enable options such as single point or speed locking etc , also be a chance to get diagnostics done on the motor to see if there is any sensors not reading what they should. I have found some dealers not very confident with the T4, but some are and will rattle through setting the LCS codes in a jiffy. I know a guy in Olney that has T4 and could enable it if that is not too far from you that may be of interest ?

maybe cheers, if it can do the sensor and the single point locking at the same time then it would be more worth it than paying out for just the sensor to be enabled. Also need to price up getting the sensor then think about it.

What a great and useful conversion for the Freelander, finding and fitting the sensor should be easy enough but need somebody to help with the reprogramming, I live in Olney, Bucks and would welcome the contact details of your guy in Olney. Thanks

I can’t see a way of privately posting his number to you. I thought there was a personal message option but can’t see nowadays

Ah I found how how to do it, however I tried sending the message but I think your profile will need to be changed in order to receive it.

Hi, my profile is set to allow members to contact me so not sure what else I need to do. I have tried to send you a message, if you receive it and it’s private I will send my contact details.
Thanks

You need 10 posts to be able to send and receive messages im afraid, its to prevent spammers joining and messaging everyone. I can see you have been a member for many years so perhaps something @Big Sandy can help you out with?

Thanks, I am normally good with IT so glad to hear it was a system restriction. Will just have to do a few more posts :)

Hi and thanks for the thread, is very helpful and very good mod to do!! One think I can not find to do is the wiring loom you got from the 75 Rover, could please post the part number or what the loom is for so I could search the net to find one? :)

Probably a BMW of the same era would work too.

The trouble is a complete harness for a R75 or MGZT would be expensive and some are now unavailable , secondhand from scrapyard you just cut the bit you need. The link below shows the options from Rimmer bros website, but I cannot for sure see which one would be required. All R75 and MGZT have them fitted so theoretically any front end harness would do. They are friendly chaps at Rimmers and a phone call might clear things up for you.

This one might work but worth checking with them before committing but at £66 might be too pricey for you. They ship abroad no problem.
