How do I tell if my engine is a 200 or 300 tdi? the number on the block starts 12L if that helps. It's in a 93 Discovery but it could have had a recon engine in it.

Remember the disco engines have different turbo orientation, so they look a lot different from the Defender ones in the engine bay. It has a black plaster cover on it does it not? I can't remember

Discovery engines have a different number on them to Defender ones, if that's where the confusion has arisen from Marc.

The 300tdi engine turbo housing is part of the manifold, where as the 200tdi turbo can be removed as a unit - thats how i always tell the difference. This is on a Defender though - i would think Disco's are the same.

Simple.
Has it got a number of fan belts or just one Serpentine belt.
The 300Tdi has a spring loaded Sermentine belt adjuster at the top of the enging.

The 200Tdi had fan belts.
The 200Tdi you need to remove the water pump when you take the timing belt cover off.The 300Tdi has a separate water pump.
