engine wont turn over,just spins

sid-uk

Shifting Up
hi guy's just been out to take the kids to school, freelander started as usual but after turning it round in the road outside my house it cut out, then it wouldnt start, now the battery feels strong but when i turn the key all i get is a loud burring sound, like its spinning something, but not turning the engine, now i've had a lot of work done underneath and the belly pan has been off for a few weeks so could it have had an affect on the electricals, splashing up, or is it something else entirely, sounds to me like the starter motor isnt firing anything up but whats spinning.

Uh, think it was around the £100 mark + labour. Mine would fire-up fine one day, then just turn over the next. Got worse until engine wouldn't fire at all. Think the Landy specialist put it on diags to confirm.

is the engine actually turning over and not firing? or does it sound like your starter is spinning and not connected to the engine?

If its the latter, then i'd say its a starter motor problem.. more than likely its not engaging, sticky solenoid possibly.. worth giving the starter and solenoid a bash with a hammer to see if it'll unstick.. otherwise it will be a new starter..

sounds like the starter is stuck and not engaging?? try bump starting it with a tow or push to confirm....unless its an auto!!!

The starter isn't engaging the ring gear.
It could be a sticking pinion, a short that is spinning the motor before engaging or the ring gear could be damaged.

4 cylinder in line engines usually damage the ring gear in 2 places, where 1 or 4 then 2 or 3 are on the compression stroke. ( 6 cylinder inlines do it in 3 places, 1,6. 2,5. 3,4) Try turning the engine a little bit, if it works, you need to take the starter off and have a look. If it doesn't make it start, the a clout with a hammer, as suggested above.;)

tried giving it a hit with a hammer but its awkward to get to, didnt work anyway, so what do ya reckon then lads? am i gonna need a new starter?
or any more tricks up your sleeves?

one thing my old man told me to try was to get it started with a bump, and then when its running to turn the key as if your gonna start it.. this would normally clear a sticking solenoid on an old orion diesel he had, but then again that thing was a taxi that had about 350k on the clock!

if that dont work then its a new starter!
