Euro Tunnel or what?

Overdrive!
Hi people,

What is the option you prefer to use when going out of the UK into france? Do you prefer using the Euro tunnel?

Kind regards
Joseph

If not taking a car, definitely Eurostar. London-Paris (city centre to city centre) is actually quicker than flying, by the time you account for 'arriving early at the airport to check in', and being dumped at an airport, miles from the terminal building and then miles from the centre of Paris.

Never done Euro Tunnel with a vehicle, but I reckon I would probably prefer that to all the clanking about getting on and off car ferries

Used the tunnel last year. Think it was £48 each way if you go during antisocial hours. Also, if you turn up early they'll bump you forward (although not if it takes you into a more expensive price zone - they stopped that a few weeks after I travelled. I arrived six hours early for a midnight crossing and drove straight on)

I'd really recommend it. Fast, cheapish and easy. Don't accept LPG vehicles though.

Early morning fast ferry from Poole (Dorset) which is closer than the tunnel from SW region and with Mrs AJ's discount (travel industry) job's a guddun'. Last time we did that trip it was en-route to Italy. Where are you getting the ferry from to Malta?

Took a range rover across using the tunnel, and i was very surprised at how quick everything was, and at the other side, within a few mins i was out the train and up on the roads driving through the country. loved it and would do it again.

I live approx 40 mins from the Eurotunnel terminal, and I until they realised they weren't making any money and put their prices up  , I regularly used to do a midweek sortie to Carrefour for booze and cheese (amongst other things).

An after 1800 trip used to be £19 (it's £40 now :(). It really is a case of driving on one end, wait half an hour, and drive off the other (and only 4 mins from Carrefour). Oh, and I've never been sea sick using the tunnel either ;).

Depends where in the UK you are driving from, and where in France you need to be the other end - for me when I'm heading to the Med, or Le Mans etc., then the fast ferry from Poole or Portsmouth to Caen is quickest. The port at Caen (which isn't actually Caen, its Ouistreham) is only a small place & really easy to get in & out of, unlike some of the bigger ones... The ferry isn't as cheap as the tunnel, but the time saved driving can be worth it.

Used most of the ferry crossings in the last few years. Agree that the Poole crossings are good, but Portsmouth is also easy enough. As for destination Ouistreham (Caen) is good (as said above) but Cherbourg is small too. Don't know what your budget is, or who you are travelling with, but Brittany does shared cabins. Great way to meet people and find out you don't like them (joke):D

You could always go to Spain and drive straight (?) across to north Italy, if you follow that, ie not down through France. Fuel and accommodation in Spain are cheaper, but you have to balance your ferry crossing. Horses for courses. Or you could go down Spain and cross through North Africa - great trip - can we come with you?

Finally if you use Brittany PM us, as we have some discount left this year for friends and family..... :) Adrian and Kate

from hear in Scotland we have the super fast ferry from rosyth to zebbrugge brilliant although a bit long it means you are fresh for the drive across Europe we did zebbrugge to seion in Switzerland in 10 hours (mind it was in dads rangie:D :D 4.2HSE.)

Used to use Le Tunnelle quite a bit. Now switched to Speedferrries which at £30 each way is cheaper and as near as quick enough to make no real difference.

Harwich to Zeebruge or Hook of Holland is another option only a couple of hours on the high speed ferry.

To Malta I'll be taking the ferry either from Pozzallo or else from Catania. http://www.virtuferries.com
