How Do I? Fitting a petrol engine

G7TZZ

Accelerating Away
Hi all, I'm going to take out my 2.5TD engine and fit a 2.5 petrol. I think it should be an easy swap, but am I missing anything.
I know I need to change the ignition switch, but does the loom match up?
Do I need to change anything else?
Cheers Jon.

You are lucky to have one of those engines. They are bulletproof.

As far as I can remember, the engine mounts do match.

The looms are different, but you should be able to get the small section that you need from a breakers yard.

If memory serves me, the engine you are fitting has a manual choke, so the ignition switch / steering lock is the same as the one for the Series III trucks. They are quite pricey. Second hand is not always an option as 30plus years of turning tends to wear the switch out.

im doing exactly the opposite.
im changing my petrol for a 19j.
the exhausts are different , the 19j's bore is bigger and the down pipes are well off.
also you will need a fuel pump but your diesel tank will be ok for a petrol.
the fuel system is different. on the diesel you have a filter , sedimenter etc but on a petrol all you need is an inline filter and a vapor seperator thingy.
the ignition switch is also different.

if you need any petrol bits let me know , perhaps we can do a trade?

G7 is fitting a 2.5, you're removing a 2.25

There's a world of difference between the engines, but your ignition switch / steering lock / choke should be handy for him (and his for you).

The 2.25 petrol loom that you have should work with his 2.5 petrol engine (and obviously his 19j loom is perfect for what you are doing), so this could be a win-win situation for both of you.

How worn is your 20 something year old ignition switch?

the engines arnt that much different really. didnt they just make the stroke a bit longer in the 2.5?
my ignition is pretty good but my main harness has been chopped in places (both 'legs' that run down to both headlights will need sorting) so i doubt it would be a worth while swap.
the main difference will be the ignition , main harness and exhaust. the petrols fuel system is really straight forward except the diesel has its pump on the engine and the petrol is either in the tank or bolted the the chassis just behind the back wheel.
so he is going to need a pump. the pump i have is a small facet pump mounted on the chassis just in front of the back wheel. this can easily be installed without the need to replace the main harness.
he is more than welcome to my engine harness though if he needs it although most engines come complete with the harness anyway.

also , you might want to check the radiator , i was going to use my old petrol one and use a seperate oil cooler but i tried to fit it today and the pipe work fouls on the fan.

Thanks guy's, I didn't know the fuel pump was electric. I think I will modify my loom to fit a new ignition switch if the conector is the same. If I use my radiator are the pipes more or less the same or do I have to make them up? Also would it be worth conecting the oil cooler?
Cheers Jon.

had a look at the parts book last night and it looks like all 2.5 cooling systems are the same.
the only difference being the td oil cooler.its the 2.25 that uses different hoses.
il have a better look for you tonight but i think the air intake should also be the same.
