fitting new speedo cable

Soulcatcher

In Fourth Gear
╠╣i all :)
Well ive just got the speedo cable from paddocks and now its time to fit the cable into my SIII 2.25 pet-engine
So i was wondering if you guys had any tips before i start
Saves me bashing my head on Satuarday:banghead2
╦hanks guys :derr:

Quite simple really, If you have an overdrive it might be easier to take it out I know it sounds like a lot of hassle but you need to get to the screws behind the handbrake drum. otherwise it's easy. remember to route the cable without any sharp bends use long shallow curves and most important cable tie it away from the exhaust as the cable being fried by the exhaust is the most common cause for failiure. I also found that if the cable isn't quite clipping in behind the clock roll the truck back or forward to spin the cable a touch.

Once you have the end off, tape some wire to it, then the new one can be pulled back in the same way., makes life a bit easier!

You might find that the fitting that goes to the gear box is not right, you might have to drill the holes a bit to get them to line up with the bolt holes on the output of the gear box.

If the cable is broken, you'll need a pair of fine nosed tweasers to get the end out of the gearbox. It will come out though, fear not.

not sure what you mean by this:confused:
the new cable has a plastic/rubber covering just like the old one
so do you fit the gearbox end 1st then to the clock not the other way round.
really sorry if i sound thick (im new at this)
thank you both for the help:)

Ahhh sorry..not making myself perfectly clear..

If you tape some wire/string/whatever to the end of the cable (inner and outer together) you can then pull it out of the dash from the engine side of the bulkhead, and be sure it will go back in the same way it came out by tying/taping the string/wire to the new one to pull it back in. Saves trying to route it whilst pushing it from outside. You can just pull it back in, and it will take the same route as the old one. Does that make more sense??:) Its a bit of a snug fit going through the bulkhead...

I would probably do the gearbox end first.

ive had to replace my speedo cable twice in the last year... didnt find it easy but got it done... after the second time, and trying to find an easy way to the gearbox filling hole i realised i can get at the handbrake thru' the seat box...

hindsight is a wonderul thing. assuming u have it.

also, where the cable goes thru' the bulkhead... ive had two different types of cable (dunno why), first fitted thru' easily, spring plastic catch thing broke off, had to replace it... new replacement had a blimming massive plastic thing to make it catch when u hook it into the speedo.. stopped it going thru the hole.. snipped the plastic ring with side cutters so i could squeeze it to get it thru'... why they'd made it such a stupid size i dunno. they woulda known it wouldnt fit cos u get a grommet.

Well thanks for all the post`s :)
Got the old one out which was a pain in the....... and took me ages
ive fitted the new one to the clock but damn if i can get them screws back in :banghead2 i can get the screw to the hole but can`t get enough pressure on the screw for it to bit what with only about 2" to move in ..............looks like i`ll have to buy a bendy screwdriver :D

the pattern cables have oval ends whereas oem have square - apparentlky this is not a problem just makes it look cheap - what were you ends like?

the little screws on the gearbox, some imperial size - BA or soemthing? are a pain but perserver - their shortness doesn't help either.

I recall it being a pain but can't remember how I solved it - rotate the top hat fiiting on the cable as it may help in aligning the holes.

thru' the middle of the seat box..... easy as proverbial pies.

ya i`ll try that way this weekend cheeers.
funny how things come in threes 1 she wouldnt start found out it was the ignition 2 the speedo and now 3 i cant get the damn steering lock off :)

(Funny isnt it the more i work on her the more i love her)

The oval end gave me grief as i had the same symptoms as when the old cable snapped so I personally wouldn't use a pattern cable again but then the speedo doesn't give the correct speed anyway:rolleyes:

You might find the reason you cant get the screw in is because the pattern parts just dont quite line up right. You may need to fettle the holes in the flat plate you screw through.

They Line up ok its getting enough pressure to get the screw to bit.
I only have about 2" to move in but besides that every thing fits ok.
