fitting series doors to defender

hunterwarden

Overdrive!
hey guys

now im pretty sure im right in saying you can fit series doors to a defender. series 3 i am refering to.

now i have asked a friend about this, and he recons that the series doors are too flimsy and rattle around alot.

now i really do have to replace my doors at some point soon. and defender doors are so bloody expensive!

whats everyones views? any inside information? i will be buying newly made series doors, i realise i will be sacrificing wind down windows for sliding windows. and would have to have inside lift catch handle things. any other bits i should know about?

cheers guys!

The do fit, I have series door bottoms fitted to mine with the military door tops. I would recommend them, no door cards so you actually have somewhere to put your knee, the military tops are aluminium so no corrosion problems there (although they are expensive to buy and difficult to find). I originally had a set of doors off a series two that the tops rusted away on, then fitted military tops, then the bottoms followed suit so bought newly made ones. Only problem which i am sure is not just the new ones, is they needed a lot of persuasion and bending to get the body lines/contours to match.

They don't rattle on mine, or if they do i cant hear it over the other things that rattle :D

I don't see the problem with sliding windows, easier and quicker than wind down ones, and haven't yet had to do anything that I haven't managed as they are sliding ones.

And again I don't see the problem with the lift up inside handles, less to go wrong and you soon get used to them, and soon learn how to not get your belt loops caught on them as you get out. It also makes me smile when a non land rover passenger cant find them to get out and has a little moment of panic that they might be stuck :p

Does anyone know if it is just a strait swap over? Or are different hinges required? Does the door catch work the same or is the catch different? I haven't really looked at a series door so wouldn't know! Cheers guys!

series doors will bolt straight onto your defender door hinges- defender door hinges are the same as whats on a series 3. likewise, you can fit a defender door onto a series no problems.

you will have to be sure that the series doors are fitted with S3 anti burst style door latches and then they will fit the defender door catch, or you could change the defender door catch thats fixed to the tub for the one that came with the anti burst door catches. this anti burst door catch is the same design that is used on the rear door of defenders.

I don't know what catches I have one mine as they are the ones that came with the original second hand doors I got, but they are a wedge shape latch with a different striker. But all I needed to do was change the striker plate on the door pillar which is just two bolts, so very easy to do.
If you end up getting new doors (similar to the ones linked) they will be blanks and you will need locks, cappings etc to build them up. When you get locks they should come with appropriate strikers to match, and as said a very easy job to do.

These people offer galvanised door bottoms for £129 (plus VAT I think) - scroll down to near the bottom of the page - series door bottoms - compares favourably with the £124 on fleabay possibly
http://www.ashtreelandrover.com/Pricelist.html

I'm loooking to do exactly what youre looking at - my doors are rotten and i fancy having removable door tops for summer (mines a soft top). I'm going to ask the fleabayers for a priice for two doors plus all the bits (locks, door tops etc) as they say they do the bits - if i get a reply I'll let you know how much.

Iv fitted series doors on mine. It makes it more land rover i reckon. I just changed the catches on the tub. I had to redrill the holes to do this tho this is easy to do. Iv used series 2 window locks so i could fit the window channels in really tight. I was lucky my father had a scrap series 3 then so i robbed the handles and catches and door tops then just bought the door bottoms new from paddocks which are rubbish but only £50 each. Iv put loads of wax oil in side so hopefully will slow down the rot. Sliding windows are better then the broken wind down ones iv had. Plus iv been used to series aswell. And iv never had lock problems with the series doors and theyve always opend which is more than be said for the defenders doors i had. Come have a look at mine if your coming near brompton regis chap.

Could you let me know the cost of all this when you done as i might need all this as well

Thanks - £50 from paddocks is better than the other prices on eBay; think I'll price up all the bits from them and see how much it comes to - I need to buy all the bits as I dont have any friends with series vehicles to rob from....

yeh £50 from paddocks is good actualy! and to be honest i dont understand how it can be bad. its a baisic frame with skin on it. no moving parts or anything, surely it cant be that much worse!

i know this sounds stupid but having never seen a series door (and inspected it that is, of course ive seen a series door). but the doors from paddocks come as just frame and skin. what else would you have to buy to go with it? if i add a list of the bits, can someone point out what ive missed out?

door bottom (obviously get left hand side aswell) http://www.paddockspares.com/395529-door-bottom-rh-series-2-2a.html?___SID=U
door seal (bottom to top) http://www.paddockspares.com/330163-rubber-seal-door-top-to-bottom.html?___SID=U

now the next bit is whats the deal with the anti burst door handles or normal door handles with locks?
http://www.paddockspares.com/337801-door-handle-with-lock-rh-front-and-back-door.html?___SID=U
http://www.paddockspares.com/395037...burst-defender-rear-safari-door.html?___SID=U

the only difference i can figure out is that they look different and with the anti burst one you have to buy a seperate lock barrel?

and the last questions are concerning the door tops:
i can guess the difference between unglazed : http://www.paddockspares.com/320853-door-top-alloy-clad-unglazed-rh-series-2-2a.html?___SID=U
and glazed : http://www.paddockspares.com/2005gr-door-top-glazed-rh-series-3.html?___SID=U

is with windows (glazed) or without windows (unglazed)... why cant they just say with windows or without windows?

and so the very last question is to do with the window locks.
push and twist http://www.paddockspares.com/332435-window-lock-s2-2a-push-and-twist.html?___SID=U
or thumb button http://www.paddockspares.com/347322-window-lock-s3-push-up-with-thumb.html?___SID=U

is one more secure than the other? or is it personal preference? and how do they fit? i assume they have to be screwed on to the windows? or another method of attachment? does the window come with holes to secure the locks in place? or is it a modification you have to make?

sorry for all the questions! all help loved and appreciated!

Well its off the road atm. Will back on in the summer. Im about evenings and weekends. Its abit rough atm cause its having work done on it and other things have been getting in the way. Youll get to see how these doors are thrown together aswell but you cant grumble they are cheap to buy. I did see you drashing around the other week in your landy. I live in the house before pulmans mill. Called rock mead. Look forward to hearing from you. Are you on faceache? Add me if you are steven defender defender price.

ha ha brilliant i know exactly which house you are. i swung round your place 2-3 year ago and dropped a note off asking for spare parts as assumed the collection of landies was relevant to you! never see you/recognise you from down the george, we used to be there the whole time!

I think i remember mother saying you popped round. I dont go in the george to much its abit quiet. Have you seen a kitcar going round which is modified for off roading and my fathers got a blue series and a old beetle. Everybody knows us! lol. Pop in some time chap!

ha ha i remember peering over the hedge at some of the kit cars in the field! think ive seen the old series kicking about in tivvy a couple of times, as for the beetle, what colour is it? there seems to be a couple buzzing around these days!

Don't buy the rubbish from paddock , buy from SP4X4 they are excellent quality and do not need bending or fidling with to fit like the rubbish paddock ones ,
SP4X4 do the door tops also even the option of galvanized tops if you want I find there products by far superior to the cheap crap from paddocks,

Nurse please bring the big syringe (the one with the blunt needle:eek:), series3v8 is overdue for his medication! :SmileNurs

Note to series3v8 - we get it, you feel that you have had poor customer service from a large supplier of Land Rover parts but other people who have been sharing interesting, informative and sometimes very funny info about the trials and tribulations of Land Rover ownership for many years seem happy with the service. You on the other hand appear to have joined this forum with the sole purpose of spamming multiple threads to promote your grievance.

We all have bad days, lose perspective and sometimes get our boxers in a bunch about something that in the great scheme of things (ie no one died, suffered life changing injuries or had their Landy pinched), aren't that big a deal. I'm sure you will get your money back and then you can get on with your life.

Do yourself (and us!) a favour, step away from the keyboard, go and do something else for a bit and if and when you come back, please have the good manners to fill in a few details on your profile and post something in the introduction section about yourself and your Landy. People on here can then decide whether to care about your predicament (or at least know who you are so they can avoid you if their paths ever cross yours) because I'm afraid at the moment, you are coming across a bit like an incontinent old drunk ranting incoherently at the world from your p!ss soaked sleeping bag - very sad (and although not very Christian), but most people will just hurry past on the other side of the road! :)

I like Paddocks, always given me good service and I am on the opposite side of the world. Devons website overcharges on freight so avoid using the website for purchases, wouldn't refund me a 40 GBP overcharge.
