Freelander gearbox problems and faults

FreelanderFault

First Gear
Have you had to spend a lot of money to replace your Freelander TD4's geabox or intermediate reduction drive unit? If so, I want to hear from you because Land Rover and its dealers are pretending there is no problem with these units.
Earlier this year I had to spend £2500 to keep my 53 Freelander TD4 going when both its gearbox and IRD were diagnosed as dead at 4 years old and 60,000 miles, just one week after the expiry of the vehicle's Land Rover Assured warranty.
We all know that gearboxes shouldn't die at that age but neither Land Rover customers services or the supplying dealer were the least bit interested in helping - they just said I was unlucky. So I had the repairs carried out by an independent and very expert Land Rover specialist. All they made out of it was the £210 labour charge and it grieves me to think that Land Rover profitted from supplying the required parts. The independent specialist tells me that they have had to replace quite a lot of these Freelander gearboxes, and I've heard the same from other repairers too. So I want to find out how big the problem is and what it has cost Freelander owners.
I want to know how old the vehicle was when the gearbox and/or IRD failed, what was it's mileage and what was the cost of the repair. Please post that information to this thread and/or email me.
Thanks in anticipation of replies and if you haven't had the problem yourself but know someone who has, please tell them about this post and get them to respond.

What was the problem that you had i have fitted both many times under landrover warrenty (3 years). Not usually to the same car, Usually for excessive noise when driving around 60 mph. Lawson

I phoned a local dealer about problems I am having with gear engagement which I am now pretty sure is to do with the clutch dragging. I asked if there were any know problems with the gearbox, particularly the synchromesh wearing out. The mechanic I spoke to told me that they had never replaced a box becasue of worn synchromesh but did sometime have to replace a bearing in them. He said the symptom is a whine and I think he said this happens in 3rd, 4th and 5th. I didn't properly get the details as that wasn't my issue. What I did get from the conversation was that the box is pretty reliable and robust apart from the bearing issue.

I do think there is a problem with the cluch master cylinders as I am on my second and I don't think its working right. It doesn't seem to be pumping enough fluid and makes gear engagement difficult. At one stage I was thinking might be a fault with the gearbox synchromesh. I wonder if the gearbox gets wrongly diagnosed as the cause of this problem.

The gearbox is a Getrag 283 unit and I'm told the Getrag policy is not to supply replacement parts, only exchange units so that isn't a great help. Bearings will mostly be available from places like BSL/Bramer though.

What do you mean by "failed"?

Do you have difficulty engaging gears when engine is running but vehicle stationary?
The usual problem is a bent or broken clutch slave cylinder mounting bracket like the one in this link..... :)

I have a 2005, Freelander TD$ HSE. The IRD unit was replaced at 48,000miles now 20,000 miles and 18 months later it needs replacing again and the dealer is saying all at my cost. I would appreciate any advise.

The very reason i have just joined this forum was to find out if other peopole had the same problems with the gearbox on the Freelander 2 as i have just had! The car developed a whinning noise when the engine was warm and after a few trips back and forth to the gagage it was diagnosed as a problem with the gearbox. This was then fixed, but one month later the gearbox completly failed on the motorway in France causing the car to grind to a halt. Fortunately i have one month left on the warranty as it has just a new gearbox fitted at a french garage. Its only done 45,00 miles in the last 2.5 years so there must be a design fault somewhere......

I had the same problem with a Freelander series 1. It became impossible to engage gear.
The problem was solved by replacing the clutch. The cutch spring had became "stiff" and would not depress. Attempts to depress the clutch resulted in the clutch slave flying off the mounting due tot he reaction.

My 55 plate freelander has only clocked 45000. Too car to origianl dealer where we bought it as new and they said the gearbox is starting to go. Not very impressed at this as car has not done a great deal of miles! They have quoted £1500 inc VAT for repair, but did say that they wouldn't push me into getting the job done yet as it is early days. I'm now looking for an alternative independent specialist before the fault manifests into something greater.

I have a Freelander 2, registered April '08 with an auto gearbox. The vehicle has done 54,500 miles and we tow a caravan. Thats why we bought a Freelander. Gearbox failed last week and was recovered under warranty and told today that it requires a new gearbox. However, Landrover are out of stock and it is on 'back order', which I must say sounds ominus! Now worried about the longterm prognosis. Is this a design weakness? Are there more out there with similar problems?

Openin g an old thread which is about the FL1 probably won't get you many answers, I'm afraid.......however we don't appear to get many problems reported about the FL2 on here, so I can't say how common it is.
Have you tried looking on the FL2's own Forum?

I've only just recently bought my Freelander TD4 ES Auto and the gear box had gone at 71,000 miles. It was regularly serviced and had gear box oil changed at 49k miles so I thought I had everything covered. The car dealers warranty wasn't worth the paper it was written on and I'm now faced with a replacement bill of £1500. I've already had to replace a seat belt mechanism (not adjustable has to be replaced in entirety), windscreen wiper mechanism had worn out, interior lights needed replacing as switched and roof fittings gone and to top it all the rear window won't go down by degrees only up or down. Absolutely gutted. Like you I just cannot conceive how Landrover can get away with this ! I'm no mechanic but I did all my homework, got a Td4, one with a chain cambelt, regularly serviced, looked tidy, called the previous garage who said owner had looked after it etc etc. I particularly went for the later model after 2000 so that I would have "the next generation" with all the niggles that I'd heard about ironed out. My old Range Rover classic went on for ever. Also, just noticed a metal scraping sound from front like a stone trapped in brake disk - I've been looking at various forums and picked up on someone else mentioning that they can hear a metal scraping sound which and a reply post was that it was to do with the IRD. I would support any petition you can get together. You could petition more widely and get the magazines involved, Top Gear ? what about motoring editors of newspapers ? Could put a link to your petition page on facebook and word will soon get round. The same thing happened to the Apple phones when the screens kept cracking and one man's crusade wiped millions off their stock market value.
Keep me posted !!

That's what I was quoted for automatic gear box - it isn't a new gear box as they are all reconditioned but it's the best price I could find by specialist 4x4 people. Otherwise you can get one at breakeryard.com for £750 but it's difficult to fit because I was told you have to take the engine out too and garages don't always like to fit second hand ones and I wouldn't be confident that I'd ordered the right one ! I limped along from December when it seemed to be missing 3rd gear and then it did it every time I reached 30mph and the revs go up to 4000 and then back... carried on and now its March it's getting worse and doing it at 50mph and has real trouble going up hills. You've got a bit of time but sooner or later you'll have to get it replaced. If the gear box gets in a real tizzy trying to change up/down the light on dashboard comes on (the amber hill descent sign) I was told to pull over and turn car off and then on again as this resets the computer and you can carry on.
