General Freelander Td4 2004 No Reverse Gear

Pjohnston1976

In Second Gear
Please help! Just bought a 2004 Freelander TD4, all forward gears are working fine, but when selecting reverse it just revs.

Once selected I hear the parking sensors initiate, and the reverse lights come on, but no drive.

I have tried it around 10 times. Some times, but not all times, there is a warning sound, similar to the parking sensors but not the same. It is a slightly different tone, and remains on whilst in reverse, and goes off when de-seleting reverse. But this warning is not present every time I put it in Reverse.

I have looked at many posts and can see everything from I need a new gearbox, to others saying it will be a control solenoid, as well as many other ideas. But wondered if anyone has had similar issues and can give some clear guidance.

Many thanks
Pete

If you just bought it, was it a dealer or private sale? Just wondering what comeback you might have.

Its a VW design gearbox, the jatco JF506e, there's a couple of things I have heard of, one being a spanner monkey removed the wrong bolt when doing an oil change on the box and the band holding the reverse gear (and a couple other epicyclic gears, 5th as well, I think) has slipped. Or the band is worn out.

Or as you said already, it could be the solenoid at fault.. There are quite a few reports about the N90 Solenoid on the Volkswagen 09A box, this is the part that land rover refer to as 'Low Clutch Timing Solenoid THT500070'

Have a watch of this...

Hopefully a new solenoid is all you need. I would try that first, to be honest.

Hope you get it sorted and it's not a gearbox out job. And finally, welcome to the forum!
