Freelander td4 2004 radiator fan cuts in at 65c and coolant never goes above 80

Hi All,
As the title explains, I have a 2004 Freelander s Td4 with a/c 115k on the clock :freelander:. When the engine coolant reaches 65c the radiator cooling fan comes on at a low/mid speed and stays on (way before it should do). The coolant temp dash gauge (when at 80c) reads half way as it should, but the engine coolant never seems to go above 80c regardless of town or motorway driving/load. It takes about 3 to 4 miles of normal town driving to reach 80c from cold. If I am stationary in traffic even for 30secs the temp will very slowly start to drop by 1c every 30 secs or so (must be the fans on) even if the temp is only 65c. The precise readings are taken using the obd connector and my tablet, so should be spot on. Any ideas why the fan comes on so early and why the max coolant temp is 80c? ...:dunno1:

This is abit of a guess as I don't have access to my car or manuals at the moment but....

Possibly there is a second temperature sensor/switch that is controlling the fans. If the ECU says its only at 80 degrees then they won't be switching on because of an ECU signal (unless it's faulty). You might see a sensor on the radiator somewhere that is likely to be a fan temperature switch. If there is one and you disconnect it and they stay off, you could measure continuity across it to see what temperature it closes at. If it closes low, renew.

Max may be 80 because of the fans or that may be the design temperature.
