am i right in thinking i should change all the filters and oil to improve miles per gallon?

Turn off aircon
Accelerate gently
Apply brakes in good time (and not at last minute)
Stay under 70mph
Remove roof bars/rack
Turn off fog lights

Have a look here to improve your fuel economy. A well maintained car always gives better mileage and performance
