Fuel filter.

Is the fuel filter something that is either good or bad, working or not. Will I notice any difference if I renew it.Suppose I might as well anyway for what it is.

They block up with the tiny particles they filter, or the water and crap out of the tank.

Bleed the filter on the little screw on the filter top on anything but a TD5, use the lift pump to prime it, it will save damaging the starter with continuous winding. The TD5 self bleeds if you turn the ignition on 5 or 6 times ( I haven't counted, but someone will know the exact amount), it goes into it's prime sequence.

on the td5 tap the accelerator pedal 5 times this puts the pump on until you either start the car or switch the ignition off!

Chris.. is the gunk in fuel filter enough to starve engine of fuel or just make it fire badly?
I know I should be in the Defender section but saw the thread.

It can do both. It restricts the flow, you don't get full power and the engine can surge or die. It's common on Plant and Tractors that use bowsers to fill their tanks. The engine will tick over, but won't rev very well. When it's starting to block the engine dies and picks up, then dies again. It can't get the full amount through the element.

Thanks Chris.. the surge & drop off I have. I've worked out I can keep it running if I keep revs high & speed down... or ought that be engine load down. Very slow accelerating & when reducing speed still keep revs high. Otherwise it takes one look at a hill...well, gradual incline really & simply faints.
I'll order a filter Monday.

With a Diesel engine, any loss of power, always do the filters before you do anything.

I've seen people taking injection pumps off and have them overhauled, to find it's still as bad.

It's the cheapest option and usually the problem. It certainly needs changing every year.

Mine's changed, gave him £20.. have to wait & see if it'll survive hills & speed humps.
It died again on the way to the garage & it's the first time I managed to start it myself, so I'm chuffed & disapointed because if the problem is solved then I'll forget how I managed it.

I changed my fuel filter (easy peasy). It has made a noticeable difference to the running of the old girl, seems to tick over a bit smoother also.
