Trying to tighten handbrake on D110

I've undone a bolt at the rear end side of the bottom of the drum for the handbrake and it hasn't been successful.

Thinkn that I've either try to mess with the wrong thing or the pads inside are too worn?

Anyone any ideas here??

Cheers,
Jase:)

The adjuster is a square 'nut' on the front of the drum. Back it off until the drum can just about turn. if the handbrake is still ineffective it could be the drum is full of muck and oil. It's in the ideal location to get filled with mud, and also oil from when the transfer box inevitably leaks. Strip it down and clean it all out, and see if the shoes are still serviceable

Try tightening the square headed bolt, that way you will be forcing the wedged end between the shoes, making them expand, and taking up any? excess wear. Even if the brake shoes were worn smooth, they should still, by default, make contact with the brake drum  .

If in doubt remove the rear propshaft, and strip off the drum and see exactly how it is all supposed to work

I have a defender 90 'defender black' and for the life of me i cannot find this square headed bolt to tighten up the slack on the handbrake? is there any design difference between the handbrake on a TD5 than what was on a TDi?
Pat.

The diagram in my Rave shows a hex head adjuster nut.
Should be at the front of the drum at the bottom.
Tighten this to take up slack in the shoes.

Don't forget that you might have to take up slack in the cable as well.
Adjuster is under the vehicle behind the brake lever.

I've thrown my handbrake drum away so it's been some time since I adjusted one.

Crawl under the Defender. At the back of the handbrake on the black backplate, near where the cable goes into the backplate is the adjuster bolt head. It could by 17mm or 15 mm spanner size I can't remember.

If you have the earlier cable and rod, the adjusted is a square that takes a 10mm spanner. The adjuster location is halfway up the backplate near the transfer box filler/level plug.

Thank you gentlemen.
Job done and dusted!
The hex nut is on the front of the drum on this particular model. (18mm for future ref) I was fooled as tightening it did not produce the familiar clicks. My last landy 'tdi' the adjuster was found on the back of the drum. However i will check the ratchet on the handbrake itself, which is prescribed to do in the post above.

Thanks..
