Hiclone - does it work?

AndyK

Accelerating Away
Hi there, just been surfing and have come across the Hiclone devices which fit in the intake pipes of the engine. Does anyone out there have them fitted in their Tdi? If so do they work?

They cause the incoming air to swirl which the makers claim improve fuel vapourisation and so boost power and torque. I think one is before the turbo and the other is before the intercooler so personally I am a bit sceptical. However I am looking to improve the performance of my 200 Tdi as much as possible as I am in the process of rebuilding my 110 as an expedition camper to take me and my wife to Australia so the vehicle is going to be well laden. I am going to get a K&N air filter, silicone turbo hoses, uprated intercooler and stainless sports exhaust so perhaps £90 doesn't make much difference but I'd rather know.

Personnally I don't see the point in them.... and have never seen any proper test data to confirm their effectiveness!!

All the other stuff sounds good though... i.e. the K&N filter (or an ITG ;) ;) ) and the intercooler etc etc all make a difference.

i read of lots of people asking the same questions about these things, never have i heard anyone say the there good just they may do something but nothing noticeable ..

Ozy, you lucky ******, would love to tour the outback in a landy... there was an article about it a few months back in one of the mags....

Cheers

I just think that it doesn't matter how much you swirl the air - by the time you put an opeing and closing valve in the way all the effort will probably be wasted. Or am I just being too simple?
Oh yeah - i did have one in my 200tdi and never noticed a jot of difference!

Do a forum search (navigation bar above). The long and short answer is no, they're an expensive gimmick, as are vortex exhausts.

The only way to inprove MPG is less lead in your right foot   .
You will increase performance by going the intercooler pump adjustment and exhaust route. Not always at the expence of MPG. :p
