Hiring a Range Rover in Scotland - your advice?

EwanM

In Third Gear
I'm off to Scotland for a week beginning this March. I had a look on one or two sites to hire a Range Rover for the week (mine is still getting it's engine replaced).

Is it normal for a week's hire to cost 800 odd pounds? Does anyone have any recommendations? Most appreciated.

regards
Ewan

4x4 hire is notoriously expensive, and of course a Range Rover is considered a 'prestige / luxury' vehicle so it is right up there in the top bracket.

Thing is, does it have to be a Range Rover? If you just need a comfortable road car you could probably get a big saloon / estate a lot cheaper.

Or, if you need it to go off road, a Defender (or Disco or Freebie) might be a better deal. For example, look at 4x4 Hire Scotland's hire charges for a week:

Range Rover £750
Disco 3 £475
Freebie £375
110 CSW £375

I hired a disco 2 for a weekend about five years ago which cost the best part of £150 - but this was still a lot cheaper than what they wanted for a Range Rover at the time!! so yeah would advise going cheaper... ;-)
