I have a herd of mice under my bonnet....

Advice needed please, as when it stops raining I will be on the floor poking at bits...

I have an intermittent squeak coming from (I think) the front of the engine bay...

Now I can hear you all shouting 'FAN BELT', but I'm not convinced...

When the engine is cold, it squeaks a bit. It doesn't increase with engine speed, in fact it seems to diminish (but that could be just because the noise from the engine increases :) ). If I tweak the accelerator from inside the engine bay, its doesn't get louder.

At rest, the noise increases if I put my foot on the brake. Foot off the brake, it stays the same until I rev then seems to fade.

Its slowly getting worse, so I will know when something breaks...

So, I am going to check...

1. Belt and tension (but think this is okay, even though it slips a little if I get it really wet - no screechy noise, but a loss of alternator power for a few seconds)
2. water pump bearings
3. Fan bearings

Any other thoughts?

I'm sure that i had this one before once and the solution (believe it of not) was just to dose the nylon bonnet hinge thinggys with a load of WD-40. I know this sounds unfeasibly simple but the incessant squeeking is really annoying so it must be worth a try!

No, just make the brakes heavy to push.

Just with you mentioning the noise when you pressed the brake pedal, I wondered if the differing vacuum would alter the noise of a worn pump.

Good point - it wasn't something I thought of - I was thinking more electrical as I have been having gremlins in that area!

Thanks to Geoblokes post here I shall get the pump off and have a look.

Thanks Chris

I don't suppose the sound is reduced if you take a firm grasp of the gear stick by any chance.
If it does.. then I've no idea what is wrong :(
Mine has a whistling type of squeek too, usually after rain, which tends to go once all the metal has warmed... but not always. Some days it just hangs around.

No change at all, until I take my foot off the brake and rev the engine....

Strangely, I squeak more if someone grabs my gearstick..... :)

You get vibration up the gearstick. That is why they put the rubber joint lower down instead of a straight, long gearstick.

That's good, so long as it's only my perishing rubbers I can keep crunching that cyncro-mesh. I've no idea if I have got 1... must have read about it somewhere. Isn't it the next one to go wrong after the gearbox & clutch.
