How Do I? I wrecked my parking brake

aclarke

Overdrive!
Hi. I drove a fair distance with my parking brake applied, so now it's toast. I'm not a mechanic but with someone who is we pulled it apart and apparently the shoes are pretty much cooked, as is the drum I guess. I suppose I need some sort of rebuilld kit or something.

As you can tell I don't really know what I'm talking about, which is why I'm here. I need to figure out which parts I need to order to fix my parking brake properly. I looked on one online catalogue and couldn't really figure out what I need to order.

I also think while I'm doing it I'll fit a light somewhere that goes on when I pull the parking brake lever. I don't want to repeat this mess.

Thanks for any help on this,
- Andrew.

See Big Sandy's link about transmission brakes.

I know nothing about Defender's but I thought they were sophisticated enough to have a light on the dash? Someone else will no doubt know better. Adrian

light!! on the Dash!!? mine's got loads and they come on at a time which is more convenient for them rather than me :D

ther is a Parking light but there's nothing connected to mine

I dont know the parts but sandy probably will.... You could have my spare but it's been earmarked for nobbers rebuild..

Depending if the drum was "Blued" ( got very hot), I would have a look at the rear seal while you are in there.

I managed to trash mine when i was laning.. Ran around in low second for a while and almost put my landy through the side of the house when i tried to start it the next day.

I parked it in gear, dipped the clutch to start and shot backwards down my driveway taking out a bit of fence!

Anyhow stripped it all, cleaned it up and reasembled and it works perfectly!

Thank you everyone. That link was useful. Am I reading here that people have converted their parking brake to a disk?

Oh yeah. I looked on the dash this afternoon and there IS a light there. I'll have to figure out why it's not lighting up.

Yes you can get a conversion from 'X-brake' that replaces the whole drumm assembly with a nice disk. Looked at one in sodbury that was on display. A very nice looking piece of kit!

That looks great. £200 from www.x-eng.co.uk translates into US$500 from www.greatbasinrovers.com , an authorized reseller. A lot more than a used drum brake assembly, but then again the X-Brake might actually work...

I'll have to give myself a couple days to swallow the cost, but I'll probably do it. I'm trying to treat my vehicle as "the last truck I'll ever buy", so from that point of view this is likely worth it. I've read nothing but glowing reviews on this product so far.

BTW it looks like The Man at X-eng offers discounts for http://forum.lr4x4.com members. Good to know. http://www.x-eng.co.uk/DiscountLR4x4.asp . I hope that was OK to post here, and is viewed as a little healthy cross-pollination by all parties...

Hey. I was poking through old threads and came across this one. I ended up getting an X-Brake from www.x-eng.co.uk. Simon there is a great guy and was really helpful. I also got an X-Charge split charge system. He shipped them to Canada very quickly. I have it all in my truck now and it's LOADS better than the old drum brake was.

Just for fun this afternoon I tried to drive off in 2nd gear low range and the engine promptly stalled. Try that with the drum brake.

The only thing I'm not 100% happy with is that I am getting a slight rubbing noise from one of the pads, but then again I haven't taken the time to adjust it either so it's probably my fault. If your drum parking brake works fine, then I guess leave it as-is, but if you're replacing it anyway, do yourself a favour and get an X-Brake.

I have an X Brake fitted great bit of kit though it took about 3 attempts to adjust the caliper, but it works great.
