ird noise? whats it like

sid-uk

how can i tell if i need to change the oil in the ird, stupid question maybe but a newb to 4x4 and i have a loud noise while driving, from the front as props are off till i get the bits i need, mechanic says i need a new gearbox as it whines in all but 5th gear, but how can i be sure its not the ird making a noise, do they whine or make much noise at all?

Check the oil, it usually turns grey and you get bits of the teeth when you drain it.

Usual place to fail is the mitre drive. (The output shaft where the prop bolts on).

If you try to turn sharply and the whole car locks up or bangs, then it's the diff gears.

diff? the props are off at the minute, just have a loud noise, also mainshaft bearing is gone hence getting the new gearbox put on,
but the noise is like comparable to a really loud diesel engine noise, and when driving it sounds really loud in the cabin, if i put it in nutruel and coast the sound quitens down alot, so its making me think its the gearbox, but could the ird be making this noise or is it likely to be the gearbox

You have a diff in the IRD for the front wheels. There is another shaft that gives the reduction to the rear wheels and the Mitre Drive.

thanks mate but that lot means nothing to me, all i want to know is can the ird be responsible for the noise while driving, and if so is it worth changing the oil to see if that fettles it, many thanks for all the help

I've never changed a gearbox, but have changed about 7 IRDs, JONV8 has done a lot as well. It's down to a seized Viscous Coupling( VC) the big lump in the propshafts.

Drain the oil and look at the colour. If it's gone, the oil will be grey. There is so much going on in there, they rattle and bang when they fail.

why did you change so many ird's, what was the symptoms that led you to know it needed changing, could the ird be responsible for my noisy drive?

Because there were all broken.

Some wouldn't turn corners, all were noisey, all had grey oil and bits in.

Yes.
