Accelerating Away
I have just had my tax disc delivered.
The renewal form arrived last Thursday and after reading it I thought I would apply online this time.
When I got to the DVLA site I found the correct page quickly.A few simple steps and I had soon got to the "application sucessful" page. All done while I was drinking my breakfast coffee.
The car tax is due at the end of next month and I think I will apply online for that one too. I only hesitate because for the car tax I will have to give my debit card details.

Couldn't agree more, I renewed the tax disc for the Ninety "online" yesterday, and it was easy enough, just need the postie to drop it through the door before the 1st  .

BTW, what's the problem with giving your debit card details?

Yeah i have done a few motors with this now (always seem to be taxing cars, hmph) wouldn't go back to the old route if you paid me :)

although I agree how easy it is to tax online :) I just wonder if its another nail in the coffin :( of the local post office ,this is one of the things that help make a village shop setup profitable and I would hate to see them all close as for many older people they are a lifeline

I have always lived in a large town with the main area post office.. never been a nice experience going there. I now pay a visit to my local village post office once a week for odds n sods, post a letter and what not.

Be a pain to see it go!

But hey, if they shut that they can afford some more speed bumps!

Good point! It is this time of the year that my bank balance gets a bit of a hammering, tax & MOT for two cars, club memberships, MSA licence renewal, wedding anniversary etc, etc, Plus the TV licence is due for renewal, and, according to the reminder for that, it CANNOT be renewed at a Post Office.

I used to be a regular at the local village Post Office this time of year, however the fact that the TV licence has to be gotten elsewhere was one of the factors that persuaded me to try the "online" tax disc renewal.

I suppose in 20 years time [when I will be an official pensioner  ], a proper Post Office will be nowt but a distant memory for me :( .

Real pain that TV cannot be renewed at Post office

I've been told that for a NEW TV licence you have to go online or Direct Debit by phone

A flaw in the system is when your car tax and insurance is due together we had our insuance expire on the 31st (tax same) renewed insurance but did not get the cert on time, tried the Online told did not have valid insurance for the period, told the same at Post Office.

had to SORN on last day, of course new certificate came on the 1st so went down to get tax. Fortunaltly went in other car as the plods were doing a vechicle number plate check for untaxed cars on the road just into town.

Guess what our neighbour got fined next mouth same thing happened to him but did not SORN it just for the weekend!

I just dont like giving details unless its face to face. I had a bad experience with a hole in the wall where it did not give me money but the reciept said I had been given £200.My account was debited right away and both my bank, the supermarket where the machine was and the machine owner denied responsibility. It took me about 3 months to get the money back into my account. In the end I wrote to all parties saying that unless the money was in my account within 7 days I would be contacting the police regarding the theft of £200 from me. Well, as you can guess I did not need to see the cops.

The Post Office here is now in a5da and its a5da staff that are behind the counter. I dont believe that they (the company) would close if everyone here gets their tax online. For all post office related stuff I always use the local sub post office anyway.

I'll be going to my local post office . It's just a wee shop ran by a guy and his wife . I don't know how much they actually get ? . But either way i feel duty bound to support them - they aren't asda thank god :) .
Mind you they must cash a few giro's in there - how much do they make from that ?.

Getting my tax disc was so easy - I wrote the cheque and handed it (along with MOT/Insurance/Tax reminder thingy) to SWMBO this morning. Returned from work and there is a tax disc - excellent :)

our local post office doesn't do road tax I have to either got to the branch in ballater go online or as I am in town every day I got to the DVLA office
you get a nice printed one same as online!:D
