Jeremy Fearn Chip & intercooler upgrade

TRR Motorsport

Overdrive!
I'm thinking of getting my Defender perked up a bit and I've heard good things about Jeremy Fearn in Derbyshire.

Has anyone had one of his Combined Chip and Intercooler upgrade for a TD5 fitted? and what are your thoughts? i.e improved towing, MPG etc...
Apparently the Defender TD5 Chip and Intercooler upgrade;
  • Increases output to 185 BHP :p
  • Increases torque to 309 lbs/ft :p

I'd like some first hand impressions not more website sales speak.

Anyone?

I havent experienced a JF remap but when researchng my modifications I noticed that they were the most expensive. Now this doesnt mean they are going to be the best....also, I dont think I could warrant the £998 well...lets just call it a grand for simply a defender remap and cooler.

I'd ALSO would like to heard peoples opinions on their work but all your going to hear from anyone on here whose had a remap and intercooler will be "it goes very well" etc etc

Ive spent £740 on my performance upgrades by buying the bits from 2 seperate businesses.

Obviously the JF tune will be excellent like most other remap suppliers.

JF
Bell Auto's
TD5 Alive
Allisport

Obviously, plug in boxes wont match up to these on quality even though ppl will say "it goes well!!!" But its how they work.

Theres only so many parameters you can change on a TD5 ECU to obtain the power and the difference between the products above will be pretty much the same....

Ive driven defenders chipped and intercooled by all above except JF and tested in my TD5, I can only give my opinion on those.

However, as your not looking for recomendations apart from JF I wont bother you, unless you enquire :)

Have fun choosing.

Blatent plug (sorry)...

But as your possibly not that far from me...
I'd happily offer a drive before you buy service with one of my remaps ;)

If your not happy with it, I'll put your LR back to standard...

Can't do an intercooler on the same basis, but would happily let you have a play with a stage 1 remap...

Thanks Graeme but I'd like some first hand impressions not more website sales speak.

Anyone?

Sorry I don't have first hand experience of the remap.

Do have of the EGR replacement tho and my 110 has definitely got a bit more mid range with it removed.

Have spoken to a few people who have had the TD5alive remap and they are pleased.

As said elsewhere any remap or plug in box will give you an improvement.
However having researched this I would stay well away from the plug in boxes.

Gary at TD5alive fits Alisport intercoolers btw.

And yeah we're promoting TD5Alive because they donated a remap in aid of Macmillan cancer support.

Anyone else wanting promoted feel free to contact us ;)

To be honest any of the guys James mentions will sort your TD5 to your satisfaction I'm sure!

Reading back to your original post noone has mentioned mpg
From what I have heard if you use the extra power you'll drop mpg if you don't you might get a few extra mpg.

But who's not going to use the extra power :p

Be interested to hear other folks views on mpg

I've got a Fearn chip & intercooler package on my Td5 110 CSW. In simple terms, it works well. First gear is generally redundant, except for hill starts, and normal driving is occasional 3rd, mainly 4th/5th. It pulls smoothly from 20mph in 5th all the way to indicated 3 figure speeds. Pick up and acceleration is keen through all the gears.

Towing a 3.5 tonne plant trailer in the Peak District is very relaxed, and it handles the same with ease in 5th on the motorway.

MPG is heavily dependent on the driver - I tend to get around 24mpg solo or towing and down to 20ish if pressing on a bit (I don't have the lightest of right feet!). SWMBO tends to get 28-30mpg.

I can't compare it to the other offerings though, as I've never done back to back testing.

Hi

Just trust this man!!! JJF should have a long beard and a long coat!!!!!

He is a Wizard with oil burners. I took my 2.8 Isuzu Auto Classic to him 8 years ago. He got going after putting it on the rolling road, several hours later he had fitted a ruddy great intercooler that he built to fit the motor, a few pump mods. The comment was before he tried it was "I canot tell you what the engine is producing due to the auto box" getting out of it after he quietly walked away saying "I think we've done enough!!!" he had taken the power at the wheels up by 45bhp!!!!.
And Its still going like a train, far quicker than my chipped intercooled P38!!

Thanks Dave, that was just the kind of info I was looking for.

I've heard good things about JF and the fact he runs the vehicle on the rollers before and after always gives me confidence. As a hobby I build engines and fettle lots of cars and as a result I swear by rolling roads to set up a car. To be honest I wouldn't use anyone who didn't include it as part of the package.

Plug-in boxes? thanks but no thanks. All they do is fool the ECU & extend the injector's duration, overfueling the engine regardless of conditions. + More BHP, more smoke and No increase in torque! I could do that with a couple of resistors!
