Lazy clutch

I've got a 1996 300TDi on which the clutch is slow to lift up again. Not slipping when in gear, or particularly hard to depress. Clutch fluid was pretty black so I used a syringe to suck out the reservoir and then bled the system through with fresh fluid.

Took the cover off the pedal box and boy it was rusty in there! I've soaked it all in oil, but the pedal is still slow to come up again.

What else should I be looking for?

Do you have a spring on the pedal or has it fallen off..? On a 300tdi its probably an over-centre spring but may have been changed out at some point...
Worth checking what state its in (if it exists), but a lot of the pressure to push the pedal back up again is from the clutch pressure plate.

Can you isolate where the stiffness is? It sounds like the pedal box could do with a strip down to be honest.
Not a massive job, probably looks worse than it is, but you may face some challenges if a number of bolts are rusty...

Its possible the flexi hose has collapsed internally.
Sometimes happens with brake hoses and restricts the fluid one-way.

Went for a drive today and it seems to be back to normal, looks like the oil did the business. When it's dry again I'll open up the box and apply some lano-grease all over inside.
